E.V. Ramasamy: A Hindu social reformer

Considered a great visionary and revolutionary after Buddha, Periyar E.V. Ramasamy tried to awaken the downtrodden people of India in his 95 years of life though writings, speeches, propaganda, agitation and struggles. Written by Prof. M.K. Subramanian, the book entitled Periyar E.V. Ramasamy: His Life and Missions shows how Periyar, a contemporary of Mahatma Gandhi and member of the Congress Party, broke away from both on the basis of principles.

This booklet, costing Rs 50 only and brought out by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy-Nagammai Education and Research Trust (19, Murugappa Street, Chepauk, Chennai-600 005) presents a short biography of Periyar, the social reformer who felt that the Congress Party was pro-Brahmin and hence he advocated dismantling of the Congress, destruction of Hindu religion and demolition of Brahmin domination in the society. A book which may have had relevance during his time will somehow not hold much water in the present times of a democratic set-up.

Devil and God reside in us

The Ultimate Truth?a book on the problems faced by the author to explain how the devil and God both reside in man himself. Written by Anil Kumar, an art director and writer, who has travelled extensively and risen practically from ashes when he had to borrow a small sum of seventy-five rupees to pay his college fees. Through parables and happenings he describes that in Nature everything happens according to a system; why man faces miseries and scarcities; why people are unequal; why God has many personifications; why man is not independent; and the Ultimate Truth?who God is, i.e. God is life and life is God. Finally the answer to life is, according to Anil Kumar, ?Give me the blessing to stay a good man every day of my life.?

Published by Krantz Publications (C-18 South Extension Part-II, New Delhi-110 049), this book on moral science, costs Rs 180.
