After Board Examination, be it of Class X or Class XII, the students find themselves at the crossroads, confused what subjects to choose for further study. This is also the time when it becomes imperative to channelise the energies of the youth into constructive activities.
With modern advances in science and technology, increasing need is being felt for inculcating a scientific temper in the young minds and thus instil a sense of pride in India'sachievements in the scientific field.
The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) has been supporting research fellows and senior research associates. Hitherto, the CSIR schemes catered to postgraduate and PhD students only; how, it has enlarged upon the science support base by including school students as well.
Two schemes have been launched?one to support students at senior secondary level and the other at undergraduate level. The first scheme provides guidances for the best science students so as to encourage them to discover science as an exciting, rewarding and fulfilling career. The second scheme, not only encourages work on projects requiring application and criticism of scientific principles, but also to practise practically what has been learnt already in classrooms. This would motivate the talented ones to take up science as a career.
Under the first scheme, the top 50 students of Class X from CBSE and State Boards are invited at CSIR'sexpense to visit CSIR laboratories on two ?open days?, when they can attend popular science lectures by eminent scientists and science communicators; audio-visuals on leading Indian scientists; demonstrations of simple interesting experiments for understanding the concepts of science and the exciting job opportunities available. This way the students are encouraged to take up scientific projects of their choice.
Under the second scheme, senior secondary students of pure science, who have secured 90% marks, are provided the facility to work on a project of their interest during the vacations in a CSIR laboratory and interact with top scientists. CSIR even provides travel expenses to out-of-station students wishing to join the said courses.
