A viral video circulating on social media has sparked controversy, showing a large group of young Muslim men wearing skull caps creating chaos at the Jama Masjid Metro Station. The footage captures passengers disregarding standard metro protocols by jumping over exit gates without swiping their metro cards or using tokens, raising concerns over security enforcement within the Delhi Metro system.

Following the widespread circulation of the video, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) issued an official statement addressing the incident. The metro authority clarified that the situation arose due to an unexpected rush of passengers when two trains arrived simultaneously at the Jama Masjid station on the Violet Line. This sudden influx led to temporary congestion at the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates, prompting some passengers to jump over them to exit.

“There was a temporary surge of passengers for a brief time when some bypassed the AFC gate by jumping over it to exit. Security personnel and other staff were adequately present to counsel such passengers, and the situation was never out of control. Rather, it was a momentary reaction due to the sudden rush at the gates,” the DMRC stated.

However, despite DMRC’s assurance that the situation was managed, the visuals of passengers breaching security checks have raised concerns over the metro authorities’ ability to handle large crowds effectively.

In response to the viral video, the metro police stated that no formal complaint had been registered regarding the incident. “We have not received any complaint yet; if a complaint is received, then legal action will be considered,” said Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of DMRC Corporate Communications.

Reiterating DMRC’s stance, Dayal emphasised that the rush of passengers was temporary and that security personnel were present at the location to handle the situation. “The video shows some passengers crossing the AFC gate and exiting. This was a momentary surge, and the metro authorities responded accordingly,” he added.

While DMRC has downplayed the event as a spontaneous crowd reaction, the video has fueled public concerns regarding security enforcement at metro stations. Many commuters have questioned whether metro authorities are equipped to prevent unauthorised entry and exit during peak hours.

The visuals of passengers jumping over exit gates without any immediate repercussions highlight the vulnerabilities within metro security, leading to demands for stricter enforcement measures. Some critics argue that DMRC’s response reflects a sense of helplessness in dealing with large, unmanageable crowds, particularly in high-traffic zones such as the Jama Masjid Metro Station.
