France Riots 2026: Jewish-owned shops burn in Marseille, Synagogue vandalised in Paris during Left-Islamist protests

Jewish-owned shops were set ablaze in Marseille, while vandals broke into a synagogue in Paris during widespread left-Islamist unrest across France on October 17 and 18. The incidents occurred amid left-wing demonstrations against the rising cost of living that escalated into looting, arson and attacks on public buildings, leaving hundreds of businesses damaged and police officers injured.

The Jewish Community Protection Service (SPCJ), known in French as Service de Protection de la Communaute Juive, reported the damage to Jewish-owned businesses in Marseille and the vandalism at the Ohalei Yaakov synagogue in Paris. The incidents have drawn attention to the vulnerability of Jewish communities amid escalating unrest, even as the circumstances surrounding the damage to individual businesses remain unclear.

From Lille in northern France to Marseille in the south, the left-Islamist demonstrations spread across major cities, with media estimates indicating that nearly 800,000 people took to the streets. Approximately 2,000 shops were reportedly vandalised or looted nationwide, public buildings were set on fire, and hundreds of people were injured. The toll included around 150 police officers, while thousands were arrested.

Synagogue vandalised as Jewish community raises concerns

The Ohalei Yaakov synagogue, located in Paris’s 19th district, was broken into overnight between October 17 and 18. Members of the Jewish community discovered the intrusion on the morning of October 18. The synagogue’s permanent building is undergoing renovations, and the premises targeted by the intruders were being used temporarily for worship.

Prayer books, tefillin and other religious objects had been removed from boxes and cupboards and scattered across the sanctuary floor. The rabbi’s office had also been searched. However, the Torah scrolls appeared to have escaped damage.

A member of the synagogue committee indicated that the circumstances pointed primarily towards an deliberate attempted of vandalism and theft. The intruders may have been searching for destruction and money.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of widespread property destruction, with Jewish-owned shops in Marseille also reported to have been set ablaze. The damage has intensified concerns about the safety of Jewish institutions and businesses during the left-Islamist unrest.

Marseille riots and selective targeting

French journalist Paul Amar has made a more specific detail about the violence in Marseille on October 17. According to his account, circulated widely online, the attackers arrived prepared with addresses of town halls and Jewish shop owners. He further said that every Jewish-owned business on one street was set on fire while Muslim-owned businesses on the same street were left untouched.

What is documented is the extensive destruction across Marseille. The left-wing mobilisation against the rising cost of living turned violent, with rioters entering the city hall lobby, attacking a municipal police station and looting shops in the city centre. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry reported a provisional total of more than 600 vandalised businesses, roughly twice the damage recorded during the 2023 riots.

🚨🇫🇷 Holy sh*t…

"They came prepared. They had the addresses of town halls. They had addresses of Jewish shop owners.

In a street in Marseille, all businesses owned by Jews were set on fire. Businesses run by Muslims weren’t."

Sportswear outlets, electronics retailers and jewellery shops along the Canebiere and neighbouring streets were among the businesses hit. A Boulanger store was also set on fire. Local business groups said the destruction had gone far beyond the demands of the original protests.

The unrest followed weeks of left-linked student mobilisation that included blockades at high-school entrances across France. Palestinian flags and keffiyehs were recurring features at many of the violent demonstrations, vandalism incidents and looting episodes.

The violence has fuelled debate over left Islamist unrest across Europe, where economic grievances and street mobilisation have increasingly become part of broader political confrontations.

As France confronts the scale of the destruction, the reported arson targeting Jewish-owned shops and the break-in at the Paris synagogue remain significant developments.

The violence in Marseille has exposed the troubling contradiction between the left-Islamist coalition’s rhetoric of secularism, social harmony and tolerance and the destruction unfolding on the streets.

While its political allies speak of inclusion and coexistence, the reported burning of Jewish-owned shops and the vandalism of a Paris synagogue have raised serious concerns about the hostility directed at Jewish communities amid the unrest. Such violence exposes the dangerous consequences of allowing ideological extremism and antisemitic hatred to hide behind the language of social justice and political protest.
