Senior BJP leader and Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, delivered a firm rebuttal to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, on October 10, calling out the Congress party’s rhetoric on constitutional values and democratic rights.
Responding to Kharge’s social media posts accusing the Union Government of suppressing democratic protests, Reddy highlighted the contradiction between the Congress party’s historical actions and its present statements. He emphasised that a party responsible for one of the darkest periods in Indian democracy has little standing to lecture the nation on constitutional principles.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday attacked the Modi Government over the detention of protesters in Delhi, saying it had turned the “Mother of Democracy” into a “Muzzled Democracy”.
Our youth, students, lawyers, journalists, social activists, farm union leaders, You Tubers, content creators, everyone who is questioning this regime are being detained.

His remarks came as Delhi Police detained more than 500 people who were trying to reach Jantar Mantar for a proposed protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
In a post on X, Kharge said, “Our youth, students, lawyers, journalists, social activists, farm union leaders, YouTubers, content creators, everyone who is questioning this regime are being detained.”
“Modi Government has turned the ‘Mother of Democracy’ into a ‘Muzzled Democracy’!” he said. Kharge also said detentions, arrests, jails, lathis and pellets could not deter the people of Bharat.
Reminding Congress of the Dark 1975 Emergency Era
Addressing Kharge’s criticisms, Union Minister Kishan Reddy urged the Congress leadership to confront its own political history before using terms like “muzzled democracy”.

“Congress lecturing on democracy and freedom of expression. The ruthless Congress that imposed the Emergency in 1975, jailed Opposition leaders and journalists, locked-down media houses, murdered the Constitution and gagged the press?” said Reddy in a post on X.
Reddy stressed that the sacred Constitution of Bharat was fundamentally compromised during those years for political survival. He stated clearly that the Constitution should never be treated as a convenient political prop by those who previously weakened it.
Highlighting On-Ground Realities in Congress-Ruled States
Bringing attention to contemporary governance, Kishan Reddy highlighted the contrast between Congress’s public statements in New Delhi and its state-level governance in Telangana.
According to the Union Minister, citizens in Telangana—including students, farmers and Opposition workers—face state machinery and police action on a regular basis under the Congress administration. He asserted that while Congress leaders portray themselves as defenders of freedom in national political debates, their local administration resorts to heavy-handed tactics against citizens demanding their rights.
Defending National Unity and Exposing Anti-National Elements
In his balanced yet firm response, Union Minister Kishan Reddy raised strong concerns regarding the Congress leadership’s backing of fringe groups and controversial demonstrations.
Reddy noted that while the Central Government and security agencies act strictly within the framework of law and order to prevent public disruption, the Congress party frequently aligns itself with elements engaging in anti-national activities and chaotic protests.
He observed that supporting unauthorised marches and fringe groups trying to march towards sensitive locations like Jantar Mantar undermines national harmony and legal processes.
Concluding his response, Kishan Reddy stated that the public is fully aware of political posturing and double standards. He expressed confidence that citizens recognise the difference between genuine constitutional commitment and political operations.
“The party that once suspended democracy can never claim to be its defender. The people of India are watching these political theatrics closely and will reject the Congress once again,” he said.
Reddy reaffirmed that the Government remains steadfast in preserving national integrity, supporting true constitutional norms and delivering transparent governance to every citizen.
