SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) authorities on October 5, Monday deported 150 Bangladeshi nationals who were staying illegally in the Union Territory, as part of an ongoing verification and deportation exercise targeting foreigners without valid documentation. The group was transported in a special Indian Air Force aircraft to Bagdogra in West Bengal and handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel for further processing.

150 Bangladeshi nationals deported

According to officials, 150 Bangladeshi nationals identified as staying illegally in Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) were taken aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft and flown to Bagdogra. Following their arrival in West Bengal, the individuals were handed over to personnel of the Border Security Force(BSF), Srinagar Police said.

The deportation marks another step in the government’s persistent efforts to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants residing in J&K and other parts of the country without valid documentation and initiate appropriate legal and administrative action against them.

Authorities have been conducting verification and identification exercises to establish the status of individuals suspected of residing in the Union Territory without the required documents.

Another deportation scheduled for October 7

The authorities are set to continue the deportation process, with another batch of 150 Bangladeshi nationals scheduled to be deported on October 7. The planned deportation indicates that the administration’s verification exercise is continuing and that further action could follow against individuals found to be staying illegally in the Union Territory.

The individuals identified for deportation are being processed in accordance with applicable legal and administrative procedures, officials said.

Focus on verification of foreign nationals

The latest action comes amid heightened scrutiny of the presence and documentation of foreign nationals residing in Jammu and Kashmir(J&K) and other parts of the country. Authorities have been working to identify individuals whose immigration and residency status requires verification. The exercise is aimed at determining whether foreign nationals have valid documents permitting them to stay in the country.

Those found to be residing without valid documentation are being subjected to the prescribed legal and administrative process, officials said. With another 150 Bangladeshi nationals scheduled to be deported on October 7, the authorities are expected to continue the exercise in the coming days.

Earlier, in August 2026, Police in J&K’s Ramban detained 21 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, during a verification drive, while six others were detained in Delhi for alleged visa overstays. According to police, the group was intercepted at a checkpoint while travelling towards the Kashmir Valley in two vehicles from Jammu. During document verification, they failed to produce valid travel or immigration documents authorising their stay in India. The detainees were taken into custody for detailed questioning and further legal and immigration-related procedures. Investigators suspect they may have entered India through Assam before travelling by train to J&K.
