Keralam: Catholic nun claims classical dance learners’ ‘future will be disastrous’, urges them to pray to Jesus Christ

An undated video of a nun, who appears to be a Christian nun, has gone viral in which she condemns Indian classical dance training for girls, linking the practice to the worship of Hindu Gods. The nun says that everyone knows the religious tradition followed while learning classical dance. She claims that when she touches the heads of girls learning the dance, they experience the presence of what she calls “formless Gods”. She further says that Jesus Christ reveals to them the forms of the Gods they worship while performing the dance.

The nun says practising the dance is good. But everyone knows which tradition is followed in the practice centres. These girls cannot grasp what they study in schools and colleges. Then, the parents bring them to the prayer centres. They faint in the examination hall.

Then, Jesus Christ shows the reasons for it. She says the parents try to strengthen the talents of the children. But this is the end result. The presence of the formless Gods they feel by practising the dance is a different phenomenon. The children should realise this and pray to Jesus Christ. Otherwise, their future will be disastrous. The parents will have to witness it.

This nun is yet another face of “secular Keralam.”

She advises parents to be cautious about sending their children to dance classes, arguing that many of these traditional dance forms are centred around Hindu Gods and deities.

She even claims that, while counselling students,… pic.twitter.com/KoqugizDSi

Until now, Christian clergy and nuns have been encouraging girls to practise and demonstrate performing arts. But, now, the latest development causes anxiety among the people of Keralam. If it is a change of mindset among the Christian priesthood, it will not be good for social harmony.

Critics argue that, on the one hand, the Church encourages the practice of ‘inculturation’ to penetrate various social groups by adopting, reinterpreting and practising local rituals and customs, while, on the other hand, it denounces the same practices, citing religious doctrine and their non-Christian origins.

They point out that practices rooted in Hindu traditions are also seen in some Christian places of worship, including structures and rituals associated with Agama traditions, such as dwajasthambam, offering harati to Jesus and lighting lamps.

According to the critics, such practices are initially adopted to retain a sense of cultural continuity among converts, allowing them to continue familiar local traditions even after changing their religion. They argue that this approach enables converts to distance themselves from Hindu religious practices gradually, while continuing to follow certain customs in parallel as part of the local culture.

However, the critics contend that the ultimate objective remains a change of religious faith and the acceptance of a different God. They argue that what begins as the retention of familiar cultural traditions eventually becomes a process of distancing people from their original Hindu religious practices while establishing Christian religious identity.

The observers view the nun’s ‘show’ as a replica of Kanthapuram A.P. Abubaker Musaliyar’s recent statement that women should confine themselves to their homes and that if girls are exhibited before strange men, it will be disastrous. Despite Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s disagreement, Kanthapuram reiterated that he sticks to his statement.

The Malaysian PM expressed his disagreement with Kanthapuram on September 13 in New Delhi before leaving for Keralam to meet him (Kanthapuram). But, Kanthapuram said the same day that Islamic rules shall not be amended for the sake of any political party or individual.
