However, the claim is false. The viral clip is taken from a longer speech where Modi was actually referring to and criticising a statement he attributed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
What is the claim?
The viral video shows PM Modi speaking at a public meeting. In the short clip, he appears to say that he will remove poverty from the country in one go.
The video has been shared on platforms like Facebook and X with users claiming that Modi himself made the promise.
Some users also questioned the statement and called it a false promise.

A check of the viral video shows that it does not contain the full context of Modi’s statement.
The original video was published on Narendra Modi’s official YouTube channel on April 14, 2024. It is from his public meeting in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh.
The full video is around 36 minutes long and the viral portion comes from this speech.
What did Modi actually say?
In the original speech, Modi was speaking about Congress and Rahul Gandhi.
At around the 27:34 minute mark, Modi talks about what he described as a statement by the “Congress prince” that poverty would be removed from the country in one go.
PM Modi said, “That’s why a desperate Congress is making announcements that even Congress leaders themselves don’t understand. You will laugh when you hear what Congress’ prince announced. Congress’ prince announced that he will remove poverty from the country in one go.”
He continued, “The whole country is surprised to hear this. The country is asking where this royal magician was hiding all these years. 50 years ago, his grandmother had announced that she would remove poverty from the country. For 10 years before 2014, they ran the government remotely. And now they are saying that they have finally found the one-go formula. Where did they bring this one-go formula from? Tell me, is this not making fun of the poor? Is this not an insult to the poor? You tell me, can poverty be removed in one go? What are they saying? Will anyone trust them? They make such claims, and that is why they become a laughing stock across the country. The country does not take them seriously.”
He was not saying that he himself would end poverty in one go. Instead, he was referring to Rahul Gandhi and making a political criticism of the statement.
But this part is missing from the viral video, which makes the statement look like Modi was talking about his own promise.
Why did Modi mention Rahul Gandhi?
The remarks were made during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign.
Modi was referring to Rahul Gandhi’s comments on poverty and the Congress party’s election promises. He also connected the issue with the Congress’ Mahalakshmi scheme, under which the party had promised financial support to women from poor families if it came to power.
So, the statement in the viral video does not have the same meaning when seen in the full speech.
