NEW DELHI: Clearing the CDS 2 2026 written examination is an important milestone, but it is not the end of the selection process. For many students, another question that arises is: Which academy can I actually join? IMA, INA, Air Force Academy and OTA provide different routes into the armed forces, and the catch is that one candidate is not eligible for all four. Your age, gender and graduation qualification can affect your options. For some admissions, even the subjects you studied in Class 12 have weightage. This is particularly important for candidates who are looking at the Air Force Academy and Indian Naval Academy.

As per the exam dates, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will conduct the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination (II), 2026 on September 13. Candidates who are looking for officer-level entry into the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force through different training academies appear for the exam. For CDS 2 2026, UPSC has notified 451 vacancies across IMA, INA, Air Force Academy and OTA. The IMA, INA and AFA courses are scheduled to begin in July 2027, while the OTA courses will commence in October 2027.
So, before deciding your preference, it is worth understanding what each academy offers and, more importantly, whether you meet its eligibility conditions.

CDS 2 2026: Academy-wise Vacancy

UPSC

The vacancies provided by UPSC are tentative and can be changed by the Services Headquarters.

IMA: If the Army Is Your Target

If your goal is to become an officer in the Indian Army, the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, is one of the main routes available through CDS. The entry is open to unmarried male candidates aged 19 to 24 years, subject to the date-of-birth criteria mentioned in the UPSC notification. Academically, the requirement is a recognised degree or an equivalent qualification.

Another important point is the type of commission offered. Training at IMA leads to a Permanent Commission in the Army. So, candidates who want a long-term career as an Army officer can consider IMA if they meet all the prescribed eligibility conditions.

INA: A Different Academic Requirement

Candidates who want to join the Indian Navy through CDS can opt for the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, provided they meet the required academic and age criteria. The educational requirement for INA is more specific than that for IMA. Candidates need an Engineering degree or a B.Sc. with Physics as a core or elective subject. They must also have studied Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level.

The prescribed age limit is 19 to 24 years, along with the date-of-birth conditions mentioned in the UPSC notification. This entry is for unmarried male candidates. So, just having a graduation degree alone is not enough for INA. It is better to check both degree qualification and Class 12 subjects before selecting the Naval Academy as your preference.

Air Force Academy: Did You Have Physics and Maths in Class 12?

If becoming an Indian Air Force officer is your goal, the Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad is the CDS entry you need to look at. But there is one detail that candidates should check before choosing AFA, i.e., their subjects in Class 12. Candidates need a degree from a recognised university with Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level, or a Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology qualification, as prescribed in the notification.

The age limit is 20 to 24 years as on July 1, 2027. Those with a valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the DGCA may get relaxation in the upper age limit up to 26 years, subject to the conditions laid down by UPSC. So, if you have always wanted to join the Air Force through CDS, don’t look at your graduation qualification alone. Your Class 12 subjects can also decide whether AFA is an option for you. Candidates should also read the preference instructions in the CDS 2 2026 notification carefully before applying. Meeting the basic educational requirement does not, by itself, guarantee consideration for the academy.

OTA: The Key CDS Option for Women

For women candidates who are preparing for CDS, OTA Chennai is the academy to pay close attention to. Under CDS 2 2026, UPSC has notified 18 vacancies for women at OTA, while 275 vacancies have been announced for the men’s course. Both entries are for the Short Service Commission (Non-Technical).
For the men’s entry, unmarried male candidates between 19 and 25 years can apply. They should meet the date-of-birth and other conditions mentioned in the UPSC notification.

The women’s entry has a wider set of eligible categories. Unmarried women, certain widows and divorcees who have not remarried can also apply, subject to the conditions laid down by UPSC. The prescribed age limit is 19 to 25 years. One detail women candidates should not miss while filling the application is the preference rule. OTA has to be given as the first and only preference for women candidates, according to the CDS 2 2026 notification.

IMA vs OTA vs INA vs Air Force Academy

The choice becomes easier when candidates look at the basic eligibility requirements:

For many CDS aspirants, the choice becomes clearer once they look at their own educational background. If you have a general graduation degree, IMA and OTA are the main options to look at, depending on your age, gender and other eligibility conditions. If you had Physics and Mathematics in Class 12, you may also be eligible to consider the Air Force Academy, provided you meet its remaining requirements. Those who want to join the Indian Naval Academy (INA), however, need to check the specific degree and subject combination prescribed by UPSC.

For women appearing for CDS 2 2026, OTA is the relevant academy under the notified entries. But choosing an academy should not be a numbers game. A higher number of vacancies does not necessarily mean it is the right option for you. Thus, before filling in your preference, check your age, gender and academic qualifications and then see which entry actually matches your profile.

Qualifying CDS Written Exam Is Not Enough

Another point aspirants should keep in mind is that clearing the written examination does not by itself guarantee admission to the preferred academy. Candidates who clear the written stage still have to appear for the next stages of the selection process and meet the required medical, physical and other eligibility conditions.

The final selection depends on merit, available vacancies and the rules applicable to the particular course. In other words, getting through the written paper opens the door, but candidates have to clear the remaining stages before they can finally secure a place at IMA, INA, AFA or OTA.
