Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on August 3, declared that “madrasas have become undeclared factories producing terrorists,” while reacting to author Taslima Nasrin’s recent remarks calling for the abolition of madrasas in Bangladesh.

Responding to Nasrin’s statement, Maurya said the issue was not confined to any one country and claimed that the problem extended across borders. “Whether a madrasa is in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or India, if one looks at the reality, madrasas are, in effect, undeclared factories producing terrorists,” Maurya said.

Reiterating his stand, the Deputy Chief Minister added, “Whether a madrasa is in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or India, the reality is that madrasas have become undeclared factories producing terrorists.”

Maurya’s remarks came in response to comments made by Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin, who recently renewed her criticism of the madrasa education system in Bangladesh and advocated for its abolition. His endorsement of her views has triggered fresh political debate over religious educational institutions and their role in society.

The BJP leader further asserted that, irrespective of the country in which they operate, “madrasas create terrorists,” reinforcing his criticism of the institution. Meanwhile, Maurya also launched a scathing attack on the Opposition over the controversy surrounding Purnia MP Pappu Yadav, against whom a complaint and an FIR have been registered.

Calling the incident “a very cheap, disgusting and criminal act,” Maurya alleged that Pappu Yadav had insulted saints, devotees of Lord Ram and the Hindu community. He further accused Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, MP Dimple Yadav, and other INDIA bloc leaders of backing Pappu Yadav instead of condemning his actions.

“They worked to insult Hindus, they worked to insult sants, they worked to insult devotees of Bhagwan Ram. I condemn it in the strongest possible words. An FIR should definitely be registered, and action should also be taken against these people,” Maurya said.

Reacting to the FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi and Pappu Yadav, the Deputy Chief Minister described the episode as “very disgusting and shameful.” He alleged that while Pappu Yadav committed the act, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav made matters worse by encouraging such actions.

“This is an insult to Bhagwan Ram, Ram devotees, saints and Hindus. It is nothing but cheap vote-bank politics aimed at appeasing Muslims,” he alleged. Maurya slammed Rahul Gandhi and the INDI alliance of opposing major reforms brought by the Union, including the Women’s Reservation Bill.

“Rahul Gandhi and parties in the INDI alliance, including the Samajwadi Party, have opposed women’s reservation. They use every issue to target the government. During the NEET paper leak protests, they used the students’ agitation. Their approach is to oppose every good initiative, but that will not make any difference,” he said.

He asserted that the process of implementing women’s reservation would move forward and expressed confidence that the Union would also take forward the delimitation exercise after consultations with all political parties.
