Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee remains a source of inspiration for the Gen Z of Bharat. He envisioned an India built on determined citizens, a robust economy and resolute governance. As an educator, politician and thinker, Mukherjee dreamed of a nation where people were intelligent, compassionate and resilient.

Today’s world is evolving rapidly amid new technologies and global interconnection. Generation Z is coming of age surrounded by artificial intelligence, digital enterprise and social media. Yet Dr Mookerjee ’s ideals remain profoundly relevant. He urged young people to be wise, courageous and kind, and held education as the cornerstone of national greatness. Remarkably, he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at just thirty-three, driven by a conviction that schools and universities should cultivate critical thinkers and capable leaders, not merely degree-holders.

Mookerjee also championed pride in India’s culture and heritage, viewing the nation’s history and traditions as a wellspring of strength rather than a constraint. Though today’s youth are globally connected, they must remain rooted in their identity. His vision calls on young Indians to be confident, courageous and compassionate — harnessing technology and global exposure to elevate their nation rather than dilute their heritage.

Mookerjee held an unwavering belief in national unity, insisting that all Indians work collectively toward a stronger, more prosperous country. Generation Z can draw from this legacy by fostering social cohesion, upholding democratic institutions and practicing responsible citizenship. In an era where misinformation and polarization spread rapidly, young people bear a special responsibility to remain informed, discerning and constructive.

Economic self-reliance was another pillar of his vision. He advocated for indigenous industry, science and technology to reduce India’s dependence on foreign powers. Today’s youth can honor this legacy through entrepreneurship, innovation and start-up culture — building ventures that drive India’s growth and self-sufficiency.

A man of unimpeachable integrity, Mookerjee believed public service existed to benefit society, not to serve personal ambition. Young people today can emulate this by embodying honesty, accountability and courage — whether in politics, business or social work — recognizing that genuine leadership rests on principled conduct and a commitment to the collective good.

He was equally devoted to democratic dialogue, engaging respectfully with those who opposed him and working within constitutional frameworks rather than against them. Generation Z can follow suit by valuing free expression, respecting dissent and actively participating in democratic life. A healthy democracy thrives on citizens who are informed, respectful and engaged.

Mookerjee believed deeply in empowering individuals to take ownership of India’s future, encouraging discipline, diligence and civic engagement. As today’s youth confront challenges like climate change, social inequality and the governance of emerging technologies, his vision reminds them that meaningful change lies within their grasp.

His life is also a testament to courage and conviction — he stood firmly by his principles even amid adversity. Modern youth need this same resolve to confront misinformation, defend core values and champion social justice, using their talents responsibly to build a better India.

Ultimately, Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee’s vision remains strikingly relevant. His convictions on education, national unity, cultural pride, economic self-reliance and ethical leadership offer a guiding framework for India’s youth in the twenty-first century. As Generation Z steps into positions of responsibility, it can draw upon his example to build a strong, prosperous and harmonious India — one that fuses innovation with values, ambition with service, and individual excellence with national purpose.
