Bhubaneswar: Security forces achieved a significant breakthrough in anti-Maoist operations on July 25 after recovering a large cache of explosives hidden in a forested area of Odisha’s Malkangiri district. The recovery, made near the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border, marks the fourth such seizure in the district over the past one-and-a-half months, highlighting sustained pressure on Maoist activities in the region.
The operation was carried out jointly by personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the District Voluntary Force (DVF), who have been intensifying combing operations in Maoist-affected areas.
Intelligence-Led Search Operation
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the joint security team launched an extensive search operation in a dense forest stretch between Analapadar (Arapadar) and Ghusumpadar villages under Jodamba police station limits. The area, located around 5.7 kilometres southwest of COB Ghanabeda under Jantri Gram Panchayat, is known for its difficult terrain and proximity to inter-state borders, making it a strategic zone for Maoist movement.
During the intensive combing operation in the hilly and forested terrain, security personnel detected an underground Maoist dump. The explosives had been carefully concealed beneath the ground, indicating a deliberate attempt by Maoist cadres to evade detection by security agencies.
Large Cache of Explosives Seized
Upon excavation, the team recovered a substantial quantity of materials used in the preparation of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Among the seized items were three IEDs weighing approximately three kilograms each, 32 gelatin sticks and 11 detonators. Additional materials included around 500 grams of gunpowder, three metres of Cordex wire, nearly 25 metres of electric wire and about 150 grams of iron nails.
The team also recovered several auxiliary items believed to support Maoist operations, including a small solar panel, a Phillips radio, two torches, two 12-volt batteries and a jet spray pipe. Officials stated that these materials were likely stockpiled for future attacks targeting security personnel or to disrupt peace in the region.
Security officials believe that the concealment of such a large quantity of explosives underground reflects the continued intent of Maoist groups to carry out attacks, even as security forces tighten their grip in the area.
Security Intensified Along Border Areas
Following the recovery, security has been significantly strengthened along the Odisha–Chhattisgarh border. Additional search operations and area domination exercises have been launched to track down any remaining Maoist hideouts or hidden arms dumps. Surveillance has also been increased in nearby villages to monitor suspicious movement and ensure the safety of local residents.
Officials noted that the timely recovery has likely averted potential attacks and significantly enhanced the safety of both civilians and security personnel operating in the region.
Sustained Operations Weakening Maoist Influence
The BSF has reiterated its commitment to intensifying anti-Naxal operations in the Maoist-affected pockets of Malkangiri district. Once regarded as a stronghold of Maoist insurgents, the district has witnessed increased operational dominance by security forces in recent years. This has resulted in improved security conditions and a gradual return to normalcy in several previously affected areas.
Security officials emphasised that intelligence-based, coordinated operations will continue in the coming months to dismantle Maoist infrastructure and eliminate their operational capabilities in the region.
The latest recovery comes close on the heels of another major seizure on June 28, when security forces unearthed a large cache of arms, explosives and communication equipment in the dense forests of Malkangiri district. That operation was conducted in the strategically significant forest belt along the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border, near the Motugudem and Donkarai police station areas in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitharama Raju district.
This region has historically served as a safe hideout and transit corridor for Maoist cadres due to its dense forests and challenging terrain. However, recent intensified operations by security forces have significantly disrupted their network and movement.
The recovery of the explosives in Malkangiri underscores the growing effectiveness of sustained anti-insurgency operations in Odisha’s Maoist-affected regions. With continued vigilance, intelligence sharing and coordinated action, security forces aim to further weaken Maoist activities and ensure long-term peace and stability along inter-state border areas.
