BENGALURU: A serious corruption allegation has surfaced against police personnel attached to the Nandagudi Police Station in Bengaluru Rural district, with claims that they were collecting a monthly “hafta” of Rs 5,000 from illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in return for allowing them to stay in the area without police interference. Following the allegations and the circulation of a viral video, the Bengaluru Rural Police have suspended the concerned personnel and ordered a departmental inquiry.
The incident came to light in Chokkanahalli village in Hoskote taluk, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Nandagudi Police Station. According to preliminary information, a group of Bangladeshi nationals had allegedly been residing in the village illegally for several months. It has been alleged that some police personnel maintained regular contact with the immigrants and accepted monthly bribes to ensure they were not questioned or subjected to legal action.
The controversy intensified after a video surfaced on social media in which the alleged illegal immigrants reportedly admitted to paying ₹5,000 every month to police personnel. In the video, they are also heard claiming that the payments were made both in cash and through digital transactions using PhonePe. The video quickly went viral, triggering widespread outrage and raising serious questions over police accountability.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Bengaluru Rural, initiated immediate action. The police personnel allegedly involved in maintaining contact with the illegal immigrants have been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending a detailed departmental inquiry.
Senior police officials said the allegations would be thoroughly investigated and stringent disciplinary action would be taken if the charges are substantiated. The inquiry is expected to examine the financial transactions, the authenticity of the viral video and the extent of involvement of the suspended personnel.
Meanwhile, police have detained two Bangladeshi nationals identified as Bilal and Rafi, who were allegedly staying illegally in the district. After verification of their nationality and immigration status, the duo has been handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Bengaluru for further legal proceedings, including deportation to Bangladesh in accordance with immigration laws.

Police sources said the FRRO will now complete the necessary verification process before initiating formal deportation proceedings under the provisions of the Foreigners Act and other applicable laws.
The alleged bribery racket reportedly came to light on July 16 when activists of a Hindu organisation visited the colony where the suspected Bangladeshi immigrants were residing. During their interaction, the activists allegedly checked the mobile phones of some of the occupants, leading to the discovery of digital payment records and conversations purportedly indicating regular payments to police personnel.
The activists subsequently recorded videos of the immigrants, who allegedly admitted to making monthly payments to avoid police action. These videos were later circulated widely on social media, prompting senior police officers to order an immediate probe into the allegations.
The development has sparked political and public debate over the alleged nexus between illegal immigrants and local enforcement agencies. Residents have demanded a comprehensive investigation into whether more illegal immigrants are residing in the area and whether similar protection rackets exist elsewhere in the district.
Officials said the investigation would not be limited to the suspended personnel alone. The probe is expected to examine whether any middlemen or local facilitators assisted the immigrants in settling in the village or acted as intermediaries for collecting bribes.
