Bengaluru: The Karnataka government’s decision to withdraw criminal cases linked to the controversial Ladle Mashak Dargah incident in Aland has triggered a fresh political storm, with the BJP launching a sharp attack on the Congress administration and accusing it of appeasing a particular vote bank at the cost of justice.
A BJP delegation led by Legislative Council Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy met Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and submitted a memorandum seeking immediate intervention to reverse the government’s decision. The party alleged that those accused in the case were involved in acts that hurt Hindu religious sentiments and that withdrawing the cases would undermine public faith in the rule of law.
Addressing reporters after meeting the Governor, Narayanaswamy said the controversy surrounding the Ladle Mashak Dargah in Aland was not merely a law-and-order issue but one that deeply affected the religious sentiments of Hindus. He alleged that the dispute revolved around a site where a Shivling had been worshipped by devotees for several years and claimed that tensions escalated after incidents of desecration were reported.
According to BJP leaders, criminal cases were registered following violent incidents connected to the dispute. The party alleged that attempts were made to damage Hindu religious symbols and that individuals who protested against such actions were targeted. BJP leaders maintained that the matter was already before the courts and questioned the rationale behind the government’s move to withdraw the cases.

The opposition party accused the Congress government of using its powers to shield accused persons for political reasons. BJP leaders alleged that the decision was driven by vote-bank considerations rather than legal merit and argued that such actions send a dangerous message to society.
“The government is expected to protect all communities equally and uphold the law without discrimination. Instead, it has chosen to withdraw cases linked to an incident that hurt the sentiments of thousands of Hindus. This is not merely a legal issue but a question of justice and fairness,” BJP leaders said.
Narayanaswamy further alleged that violence had occurred during the dispute and claimed that police personnel and officials faced resistance while trying to control the situation. He argued that individuals facing serious allegations should be allowed to face the judicial process and prove their innocence in court rather than receiving relief through executive decisions.
The BJP also questioned what it described as the government’s “double standards” in handling different protests and agitations. According to party leaders, activists associated with various Kannada, Dalit and Hindu organisations have often faced strict legal action, while cases linked to the Aland controversy were being withdrawn.
The party contended that the decision has created widespread resentment among Hindu organisations and devotees across the state. Several BJP leaders warned that withdrawing the cases could encourage future incidents and weaken deterrence against those accused of disturbing communal harmony.
The memorandum submitted to the Governor urged him to examine the legality and propriety of the government’s decision. The BJP requested that appropriate directions be issued to ensure that the withdrawal order is reconsidered and that the cases proceed in accordance with law.
Political observers note that the Ladle Mashak Dargah issue has remained a sensitive and contentious matter in Kalaburagi district for years, periodically sparking tensions and attracting statewide attention. The latest controversy has once again brought the issue to the forefront of Karnataka politics, with both the ruling Congress and the BJP taking sharply opposing positions.
While the state government has defended its decision, the BJP has vowed to continue its campaign against the withdrawal of the cases. Party leaders have indicated that they will raise the issue both politically and legally, arguing that justice must prevail and that any alleged acts of desecration of Hindu religious symbols should be dealt with strictly under the law.
With the matter now reaching Raj Bhavan, the controversy is expected to intensify further in the coming days, adding another flashpoint to Karnataka’s already charged political landscape.
