NEW DELHI: A fierce controversy has erupted in the country’s political landscape; specifically, during a press conference, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge used the word “terrorist” in reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As soon as this remark surfaced, it triggered sharp reactions across social media platforms. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a direct attack on the Congress, terming the remark an insult to the Prime Minister, while the Congress party immediately initiated damage control efforts.

Observing the escalating controversy, Kharge subsequently issued a clarification regarding his remark. He clarified that his intention was not to label the Prime Minister a “terrorist,” but rather to assert that Modi is “terrorising political parties and the public.” It is noteworthy that Kharge’s statement was originally made in the context of Tamil Nadu politics. He was raising questions regarding a potential alliance between the AIADMK and the Bharatiya Janata Party. He questioned how a party that adheres to the ideology of Annadurai could align itself with the BJP.

The BJP reacted sharply to Kharge’s statement. Party spokesperson Sambit Patra termed the remark “highly condemnable,” stating that it exposes the Congress party’s “political culture and mindset.” The BJP alleged that the Congress leadership is consistently pursuing a strategy to insult the Prime Minister, and that these actions are being orchestrated at the behest of Rahul Gandhi. Broadening the issue into a wider political narrative, the BJP linked this incident to past controversies involving the Congress, alleging that the party’s stance on critical issues such as national security and terrorism has always remained dubious.

The Impact of Social Media: Rapid Escalation of the Controversy

Social media also played a significant role in this entire episode. As soon as Kharge’s statement surfaced, it went viral rapidly, triggering sharp reactions from people across various platforms. While some users termed it a violation of democratic norms, others attributed it to political desperation. Conversely, Congress supporters defended Kharge’s clarification, arguing that his statement had been taken out of context.

One user, Dhirendra Singh, wrote, “All boundaries of decency have been crossed! Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge has used the word ‘Terrorist’ to describe the country’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Is this a ‘Shop of Love’ or a ‘Market of Hate’?” Meanwhile, in his reaction, Neelkanth Bakshi wrote, “Mallikarjun Kharge, you should be ashamed of yourself! How dare you call Prime Minister Narendra Modi a terrorist? You are labeling the very man who enters the terrorists’ own backyard in Pakistan to eliminate them as a terrorist? This is not politics; this is the language of sedition. Calling the person who conducts surgical strikes against real terrorists a ‘terrorist’ is a manifestation of Congress’s desperation. Your ‘clarification’ is a lie; the hatred is clearly visible. The Congress party has stooped so low that its President is now echoing the rhetoric of Pakistan. The public will never forgive those who speak against the nation.”

Senior journalist Harshvardhan Tripathi also expressed his displeasure regarding this statement, remarking, “Rahul Gandhi frequently displays the Congress party’s desperation. Kharge-ji has now provided yet another proof of this. Mallikarjun Kharge has called Narendra Modi a terrorist. The Congress President is labeling a democratically elected representative, the Prime Minister of the country; as a terrorist.”

pic.twitter.com/ifglSuoo3b

In his reaction, Advocate Santosh Pandey wrote: “Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s act of calling the Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, a ‘terrorist’ is highly condemnable. The use of such derogatory language against the country’s Prime Minister; who was elected through a constitutional process exposes his anti-constitutional mindset. Statements of this nature demonstrate the extent of the hatred and malice harbored by the Congress President toward the nation’s ‘Pradhan Sevak’ (Prime Servant). Such actions are detrimental to the unity and integrity of the nation. The Congress President ought to publicly apologize to the country for this statement.” Similarly, numerous comments opposing Kharge’s remark are being observed across social media platforms.

Kharge’s Past Controversial Statements Also in the Spotlight

This is not the first time a statement by Mallikarjun Kharge has landed in controversy. He has previously made several statements that sparked a political storm. One major controversy arose when he compared Prime Minister Modi to a “poisonous snake.” The BJP reacted strongly to this statement as well, labeling it as derogatory language directed at the Prime Minister. Subsequently, Kharge was compelled to clarify this remark, explaining that his intent was not personal, but rather aimed at criticizing political policies.

Similarly, on another occasion, he described the BJP and its supporters as a “mechanism for spreading lies,” a comment that also elicited a sharp political backlash. These statements signaled that the rhetoric employed by the Congress leadership is becoming increasingly aggressive.

Political Strategy or Verbal Slip-up?

In this context, political analyst Pankaj Shukla observes that such statements can be interpreted in two ways: either they constitute a verbal slip-up, or they are a deliberate tactic part of a calculated political strategy designed to grab attention. In the case of Congress President Kharge, the debate continues as to whether his statement was made inadvertently or if it was a calculated move to launch an aggressive attack on the BJP.

For the moment, this entire sequence of events once again raises the question: is the standard of decorum in Indian political discourse steadily eroding? After all, the words spoken by leaders are not merely statements, remarks, or speeches; they serve to provide direction, inspire development and can even ignite outrage. It is precisely for this reason that they are capable of generating both political messages and social impact. The recent statement by Mallikarjun Kharge and the controversy it has spawned serves as a clear indication that the need for balance and restraint in political dialogue has become more critical now than ever before.
