As the campaign for the high-voltage polls accelerates in West Bengal, the Kolkata Police has unleashed lathi-charge against BJP candidate Rakesh Singh. As per the reports, the police have also targeted the daughter of Rakesh Singh and his other supporters who were participating in the election rally. The incident broke out near Ekbalpore Police Station in Kolkata amidst heightened political tensions as the state stands on the brink of the Assembly Elections.
The West Bengal BJP under the leadership of Rakesh Singh was staging a demonstration outside the Ekbalpore Police Station questioning the administrative bias in Kolkata. However, the police escalated lathi-charge to thwart the crowd. This resulted in one severe injury and several others were affected with minor injury. The row reflects administrative bias in Kolkata and how the law & order tools such as the police system are used to fulfill political motives under the TMC government.

The incident erupted during a clash between BJP and TMC supporters on Hossain Shah Road during a BJP meeting led by Rakesh Singh. Soon tensions flared outside Ekbalpore Police Station. Clash was triggered between the TMC and BJP leaders due to the counter-sloganeering by the Trinamool supporters against BJP. This has led to the arrest of five BJP leaders. Rakesh Singh is a BJP candidate from the Kolkata Port constituency. He was leading the demonstration and protest outside the police station questioning police inaction, during which the clashes erupted. The party workers had gathered in large numbers and were raising slogans & were demanding intervention to rectify administrative misdeeds.
As the clash erupted between BJP and TMC, police lathi charged to disperse the crowd that led to several injuries. The political atmosphere of West Bengal is highly charged as the assembly elections are scheduled in two phases i.e. on April 23 and April 29. The election results are set to be announced on May 4.
