Koppal: Fresh allegations of a “love jihad” case have surfaced in Koppal, triggering tension and protests by local groups. The controversy comes close on the heels of similar incidents reported recently in Hubballi, which had created widespread debate and unrest.
According to preliminary information, a nursing student from a village in Kushtagi taluk, belonging to the Hindu community, was allegedly befriended and influenced by a youth identified as Mustafa from Kampli village in Koppal taluk. The two were reportedly found together in a village area, where local Hindu youths intervened and confronted the youth.
The situation escalated when the youth was allegedly detained by a group of locals, who proceeded to check his mobile phone. During this, it is claimed that several objectionable photos and videos involving multiple young women were found on the device. Sources allege that more than ten such videos were present, although the authenticity of these claims is yet to be officially verified by the police.
It is further alleged by the youth that the youth had recorded inappropriate videos and had been in contact with multiple girls. There are also accusations that he had encouraged certain activities such as alcohol consumption. However, officials have not confirmed these allegations so far.
In the midst of the confrontation, the youth reportedly reset his mobile phone, which has added to suspicions and demands for a detailed forensic investigation. Meanwhile, the youth is said to have claimed that he had already married a Hindu woman, though no official documents or confirmation regarding this claim have been produced yet.
The incident has sparked protests in Koppal town, with members of right-wing organisations gathering near the police station demanding strict action. A complaint has been submitted to the Superintendent of Police by activists, including representatives of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. District president Dr Sangamesh Hiremath and other members have urged authorities to conduct a thorough probe and take legal action if wrongdoing is established.
Police sources said that a case is being examined and necessary legal steps will be taken based on evidence. They also appealed to the public to maintain calm and not spread unverified information that could disturb communal harmony.
The incident has once again brought focus on sensitive interfaith relationship issues in the region, with authorities expected to handle the matter cautiously to prevent escalation. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the facts and determine whether any criminal offense has been committed.
‘Love Jihad Network Active’: Prahlad Joshi
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has alleged that “love jihad” cases in Karnataka are part of a larger organized network, even as he launched a scathing attack on the state government over the deteriorating law and order situation.
Addressing reporters, Joshi claimed that such incidents are not isolated but are being reported across the country, particularly in states governed by the Indian National Congress. “This appears to be a systematic network operating at a larger level. The government must take it seriously and act decisively,” he said, warning that failure to respond could create public unrest.
Shifting focus to the broader law and order scenario, the Union Minister alleged that the situation in Karnataka has “completely collapsed.” He attributed this to widespread corruption and irregularities within the police department, particularly pointing to an alleged transfer racket that has weakened the system.
According to Joshi, political interference in policing and lack of accountability have emboldened criminal elements. “The administration has failed to ensure safety even for its own party members,” he said, referring to a recent incident where one Congress leader allegedly killed another.
He said such developments have created fear among citizens and raised serious concerns about governance. “If ruling party leaders themselves are not safe, it reflects the gravity of the situation. What security can common people expect?” he asked.
Joshi further accused the government of ignoring critical issues and failing to take timely action against offenders. He stressed that maintaining law and order is the fundamental responsibility of any government and that the current administration has fallen short in this regard.
The Union Minister urged the state government to initiate immediate corrective measures to restore public confidence. He warned that continued inaction could lead to widespread dissatisfaction and protests among the public.
“The government must not push people to a situation where they are forced to take to the streets. It should act now to ensure peace, safety, and stability,” he said.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions in Karnataka, with opposition leaders stepping up criticism of the government over issues ranging from governance lapses to rising crime incidents.
