A special NIA court at Patiala House Court granted 11 days of custody to the seven foreign nationals on March 16, remanding them to NIA custody until March 27.
According to officials, three Ukrainians were detained in Delhi, three in Lucknow, and a US citizen in Kolkata. Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma conducted the hearing in a closed courtroom and approved the remand, despite the agency seeking 15 days for further investigation.
Senior advocates Pramod Kumar Dubey and Atul Sehgal opposed the NIA’s plea for custodial remand on behalf of the accused.
The NIA alleges that the individuals entered India on valid visas before illegally travelling to Mizoram, a protected area requiring special permits for foreign nationals. They are further accused of crossing into Myanmar, where they allegedly made contact with and trained ethnic armed groups linked to Indian insurgent outfits.
