‘Role models shape ideology’: Swami Chidananda Puri at former Vivekananda Kendra president Dr Lakshmikumari’s navati

Speaking at the Navati celebrations of Dr. M. Lakshmikumari on March 1, Swami Chidananda Puri described her life as a living embodiment of dharma and social commitment. Leaders from various Hindu organisations highlighted her contribution to Vivekananda Kendra and national integration efforts.

An ideology, however lofty or intellectually sound, can never truly enter one’s heart unless it is reflected in the life of a living role model, and such an ideal is Dr. M. Lakshmikumari ji, who herself stands as a noble soul whose life is a living testimony to dharma, service, and unwavering commitment to the nation, said Swami ji Chidananda Puri on March 1.

Swamiji was addressing the celebrations in connection with the Navati (90th birthday) of Dr. M. Lakshmikumari, alias Deedi. Deedi drew inspiration from the life of Swami Vivekananda ji and accepted social service as her life mission. She is the former president of Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari, incepted by Swarg. Eknath Ranade. She now heads the Vivekananda Vedic Vision Foundation at Kodungalloor, Thrissur district.

Swami ji said that Dr. Lakshmikumari’s life has been dedicated to the restoration and existence of dharma. Her education, the subjects she studied, and the circumstances she had undergone were entirely different from contemporary times. Still, she reached covetable positions. However, she dedicated her material qualifications to the service of the samaj. She devoted her life as a role model and message. That is why her Navati is quite relevant now; hence, an august assembly has met here to celebrate it. Otherwise, completing 90 years is not significant.

Even though we attained freedom constitutionally, the eastern regions (the Northeast) were largely not fully integrated into the national mainstream. However, movements like Vivekananda Kendra worked there among the local communities, imparted education to underprivileged people, and fostered social and national consciousness among them.

The organisation could mould thousands of people in this manner. The role of Vivekananda Kendra in national integration is truly a study material. Dr. Lakshmikumari belongs to such a movement.

Chinmaya Mission Kerala Chapter head Swami Vivikthananda ji, Sambodh Foundation’s Swamy Avyakthananda, Senior RSS Pracharak S. Sethumadhavan, Vivekajyothi Puraskar laureate Dr. Bhanumati, and famous gynaecologist Dr. Panicker spoke on the occasion. Dr. Lakshmikumari delivered the reply speech.

The life and work of such individuals and organisations illustrate the active contribution of several Hindu organisations in the last century. Their continued efforts, while navigating complex challenges to serve the country, have immensely influenced society and continue to inspire all.
