New Delhi: The national capital is set for a defining diplomatic and technological moment as Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurates the India AI Impact Summit 2026 today.
The high-stakes keynote at Bharat Mandapam is expected to position India at the centre of the global artificial intelligence conversation, with world leaders, tech CEOs and multilateral institutions in attendance.
After a week of deliberations, panel discussions and a high-footfall AI Expo, the formal inauguration marks the summit’s most anticipated moment. The venue, transformed into a futuristic AI hub, has already drawn more than 2.5 lakh visitors and delegates from over 60 nations.
Todays schedule begins with a symbolic display of global unity:
09:15 AM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome heads of state and international leaders, followed by a Family Photo symbolising collective commitment to AI governance.
09:40 AM: The official Opening Ceremony of India AI Impact Summit 2026 begins, featuring addresses by French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
10:25 AM: PM Modi will deliver the keynote address, outlining India’s roadmap for “Sovereign AI” and inclusive technological growth.
From tech expo to geopolitical stage
Often described as the “G20 moment of the tech world,” the summit has grown beyond a conventional technology conference. More than 20 heads of state and 500 global AI leaders including senior executives from leading AI firms are participating.
The theme, “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (Welfare for all, happiness of all), underscores India’s argument that artificial intelligence must serve social empowerment, agriculture, healthcare and sustainable development—rather than deepen global inequality.
The architectural grandeur of Bharat Mandapam, illuminated with AI-themed installations, has further amplified the optics of India’s ambition to lead conversations around responsible AI.
International endorsement of ‘India Way’
Global leaders have openly praised India’s approach to digital transformation.
UN chief António Guterres termed India a “very successful emerging economy” and a “perfect host,” stressing that the world needs India’s leadership to ensure AI does not become the privilege of a few.
Estonian President Alar Karis, representing one of the world’s most digitised nations, highlighted India’s Digital Public Infrastructure as a benchmark for modern governance models.
Delegates have also taken note of India’s launch of 12 indigenous foundation AI models tailored to Indian languages, alongside efforts to democratise access to high-end computing resources—moves seen as critical for empowering the Global South.
Beyond Headlines: A Strategic Signal
Diplomats and policy analysts view Thursday’s keynote not merely as a ceremonial address, but as a declaration of India’s long-term AI vision. The government’s emphasis on “Sovereign AI” signals an attempt to balance innovation with strategic autonomy, particularly in data governance, compute infrastructure and language inclusion.
As leaders gather for the family photograph, the symbolism is unmistakable: India is positioning itself not just as a consumer of AI technologies, but as a rule-shaper in the global digital order.
With handshakes, strategic conversations and a globally televised keynote, today at Bharat Mandapam could mark a pivotal chapter in India’s AI diplomacy.
