Kolkata: A Booth Level Officer and his accomplice have been arrested in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district for allegedly murdering a 30 year old man over an alleged extramarital relationship with the victim’s wife. The accused allegedly lured the victim under the pretext of official work linked to electoral roll revision before killing and dismembering him.
The incident, which has triggered public outrage in the Baduria area, came to light after dismembered body parts were recovered from a canal on Friday morning.
According to police officials, the main accused has been identified as Rizwan Hasan Mondal, a Booth Level Officer tasked with electoral duties. His alleged accomplice, Sagar Gyne, has also been taken into custody. The victim has been identified as Nasir Ali, aged 30.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Mondal was allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with Ali’s wife. Police believe this relationship led to escalating tensions and ultimately culminated in the murder.
Investigators said that on Monday evening, Mondal allegedly contacted Ali and asked him to meet at a deserted location. He reportedly told Ali that he needed to discuss matters related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in the state. Trusting the official pretext, Ali left home to meet Mondal but did not return.
When Ali failed to come back late Monday night, his family grew concerned and began searching for him. After being unable to trace his whereabouts, they filed a missing person complaint with the local police the following day.
During the investigation, police tracked phone call records and movement data, which eventually led them to a canal in the Baduria area of North 24 Parganas. On Friday morning, officers recovered dismembered body parts from the canal. The remains were later identified as those of Nasir Ali.
Police sources said that during questioning, Mondal allegedly confessed to his involvement in the murder. He is accused of killing Ali and subsequently disposing of the body in three separate locations within the canal in an attempt to destroy evidence and delay identification. Gyne is alleged to have assisted in the murder, dismemberment and disposal of the body.
Both accused have been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events, establish motive in detail and determine whether any other individuals were involved.
The brutal nature of the crime sparked anger among local residents. Following the recovery of the body parts, locals staged a road blockade in Baduria, demanding swift justice and strict punishment for the accused. The protest continued for nearly half an hour before police intervened and restored normalcy.
Senior police officials stated that additional forces were deployed in the area to prevent escalation and maintain law and order. Authorities have assured the victim’s family that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and that a chargesheet will be filed promptly.
The case has raised serious questions, particularly because the prime accused was serving as a Booth Level Officer, a position associated with electoral responsibilities. Officials have indicated that departmental action will also be considered as per service rules, pending the outcome of the investigation.
