MUMBAI: Sangh is of the belief that there should be unity in society, and it will do whatever it takes to maintain it, said Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, Sunil Ambekar, in response to a question on UGC regulations during a press conference in Mumbai on February 3, 2026.
He said that keeping society united is an integral part of the Sangh’s core ideology. Sangh firmly believes that there must be unity in society, and to preserve and strengthen this unity, whatever is necessary will be done.
“The Sangh has been formed for the same purpose. Whatever Sangh has done is for the country,” he said.
Responding to a question on the UGC regulations, Sunil Ambekar said that since the matter is currently before the court, different people are expressing their views. He noted that the court has stayed these guidelines. While diverse opinions have emerged, the Sangh’s clear stand is that social unity must be maintained.
Notably, last month, the Centre notified new regulations mandating all higher education institutions to form “equity committees” to look into discrimination complaints and promote equity, triggering protests.
The University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, mandated that these committees must include members of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), the Scheduled Castes (SCs), the Scheduled Tribes (STs), persons with disabilities, and women.
The Supreme Court stayed the UGC equity regulations on preventing caste-based discrimination on campuses, saying the framework is “prima facie vague”, can have “very sweeping consequences” and may end up dividing society with a “dangerous impact”.
“The court has stayed it (the guidelines). Different people have expressed their views and it is before the court. Sangh’s belief is there should be unity in the society. We all will do whatever is needed to maintain the unity,” Ambekar said in response to a question on UGC regulations.
Sunil Ambekar also shared details about the centenary lecture series, “100 Years of the Sangh Journey: New Horizons,” to be held in Mumbai as part of the Sangh’s centenary year celebrations.
This will be a similar lecture series that have already been organised in Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata. The Mumbai lecture series will be the final event in this national sequence. All previous programmes received an encouraging and enthusiastic response.
He informed that the lecture series will be held at the Nehru Centre Auditorium, Worli, on February 7 and 8, comprising four sessions. On the first day, two sessions will be held from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, during which Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat will deliver his address. On the second day, two sessions will take place from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. The second day will include a question-and-answer session, during which the Sarsanghchalak will respond to queries raised by the distinguished participants.
In his address, Dr Bhagwat will present his reflections on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s 100-year journey in the context of its founding objectives. The Sangh continues to work today with the same objectives for which it was established, while its scope of work has expanded. The presence of swayamsevaks in social life has increased. He will also present the Sangh’s perspective on various issues, its future plans, and the concept of Panch Parivartan (five-fold transformation) for social change.
Sunil Ambekar further stated that invitees have been classified into 10 broad categories and 103 sub-categories, including eminent personalities from the fields of economics, judiciary, administration, arts, sports, religion, politics, the corporate sector, cinema, and other areas. Preparations for the lecture series have been underway for the past four months. Around 1,200 distinguished persons from Mumbai and surrounding regions have been invited, with an expected attendance of 800-900.
He also outlined the journey of the Sangh’s work in Mumbai, which began 90 years ago, and shared information about the ongoing Griha Sampark Abhiyan (home contact campaign). The campaign has commenced across Maharashtra and is currently underway in Mumbai. Similarly, Hindu Sammelans are being organised at the mandal level, and social harmony meetings are being held at the khand and nagar levels.
Speaking on the issue of language and identity in local body elections, he said that the RSS has always believed that all languages of Bharat are national languages. He added that Bharat has a long tradition of all languages flourishing together, and it is only when people forget this historical legacy that disputes arise.
