Bihar: 4 including key accused Sharif held in connection with ‘Thawen Mandir’ theft case, jewellery recovered

The police also recovered the stolen pieces of jewellery including portions of Devi's Mukut, Chhatra and a gold neckless from the possession of the accused

NEW DELHI: In a significant breakthrough, police in Bihar has arrested 4 accused in connection with the Thawen temple theft case at Gopalganj district, officials said on Tuesday, January 27.

Those arrested have been identified as Sharif Alam, Chand Alam, both resident of Arar police station of Gopalganj, Ejaj Ali, a resident of Siwan and a woman accused.

The police also recovered a silver neckless and the remaining pieces of Chhatra, gold neckless and Mukut stolen from the temple’s sanctum sanctorum in December last year. The said jewelleries were unearthed from a private premise belonging to accused Sharif.

According to police, Sharif was arrested from Bhaojpurwa and has a criminal track record. All the arrested accused have been sent to judicial custody.

The theft incident had taken place on the night of December 17, last year and was reportedly carried out by two masked individuals, sparking an outrage.

The Gopalganj police following the incident initiated a probe by registering a case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the matter subsequently, which later nabbed three individuals including a key accused Deepak Rai alias Deepanshu, a resident of Jamania police station of Gajipur district in Uttar Pradesh.

The other two arrested accused were Injamamul Alam, a resident of East Champaran district and Guddan alias Guddal, a resident of Goplaganj district itself.

Located near Gopalganj town, the Thawen Mandir Shaktipeeth is a sacred religious site in state of Bihar, The temple attracts a large number of devotees from nearby regions and distant locations everyday.
