Army vehicle plunges in gorge, leaves 10 soldiers dead

JAMMU: At least ten Indian Army soldiers were killed on January 22 after a bulletproof military vehicle plunged into a deep gorge in J&K’s Doda district, officials said. The tragic accident occurred at Khanni Top near Thananala, around 20 kilometres ahead of Bhaderwah town on the Bhaderwah–Chamba interstate road.

According to officials, the Army vehicle was carrying 17 personnel and en route to a high-altitude post when the driver reportedly lost control while navigating a narrow, treacherous stretch of the mountainous road.

The vehicle fell nearly 200 feet into a gorge, resulting in the instant death of ten soldiers. Rescue operations were immediately launched with the help of local authorities and Army personnel to retrieve the injured and recover the bodies.

J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives of 10 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate road accident in Doda. We will always remember their outstanding service and supreme sacrifice,” he said in a post on X, offering condolences to the bereaved families.

The Bhaderwah–Chamba road is known for its sharp turns, steep drops and challenging terrain, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Officials said an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
