New Delhi: In light of the security situation, India has advised dependents of Mission and Post officials in Bangladesh to return home as a precautionary measure, sources stated. The sources added that the Indian Mission and all Posts continue to remain open and fully operational.
Indian missions have been facing security threats, especially in the aftermath of the killing of Islamist youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December 2025. It spread after rumours were circulated that the shooters of Hadi had fled to India; however, later, one of the accused released a video claiming that he was in a Gulf country.
India is also raising concerns over the safety of minorities, especially Hindus in Bangladesh, since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus assumed office following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024 after the students led an uprising.
On January 9, India called on Bangladesh to firmly deal with communal incidents in the country. “We continue to witness a disturbing pattern of recurring attacks on minorities as well as their homes and businesses by extremists,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said.
According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, the reported cases of communal violence stood at 51, including 10 murders, in December 2025 alone. At least seven members of the Hindu community have been killed in Bangladesh since December, according to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council.
India’s advisory comes as the Bangladeshi interim government, headed by Muhammad Yunus, on Monday released details on incidents affecting minority communities and the broader law and order situation in the country during 2025.
According to an official review of police records shared by the chief adviser of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, on social media, a year-long review of official police records from January to December 2025 documents 645 incidents involving members of minority communities. The data was compiled from verified First Information Reports, General Diaries, charge sheets and investigation updates nationwide.
Explaining the classification of the cases, the statement said, “The findings show that 71 incidents were identified as having communal elements, while 574 incidents were assessed as non-communal in nature. Communal incidents primarily involved vandalism or desecration of religious sites and idols, along with a small number of other offences.”
India raised concerns over the violence against Hindus
Here are 10 reported killing cases in Bangladesh in which Hindu victims were killed by attackers identified as Muslim men or mobs.
Dipu Chandra Das – An 18‑year‑old Hindu student was lynched by a Muslim mob after false rumours of blasphemy. He was beaten, hanged from a tree, and his body was later burned. Police investigations found no evidence supporting the blasphemy allegation, and multiple Muslim attackers were arrested.
Khokon Chandra Das- A Hindu businessman and mobile banking agent, was stabbed repeatedly by Muslim assailants and then set on fire. The attack occurred while he was returning home from work; police arrested Muslim suspects, citing robbery and communal hostility.
Ruplal Das – Ruplal, a Hindu farmer, was beaten to death by a group of Muslim men during a mob attack following a land dispute that escalated into communal violence.
Pradip Lal – Killed in the same mob violence as Ruplal Das, Pradip Lal was assaulted by Muslim attackers armed with sticks and iron rods. Both deaths were recorded as mob lynchings.
Babul Chandra Roy – A Hindu shopkeeper, was hacked to death by Muslim men after refusing to pay extortion money. His shop was later vandalised and looted.
Narayan Chandra Saha– A Hindu factory worker was beaten to death by Muslim co‑workers following an argument that escalated into a communal assault, according to FIR details.
Sanjoy Chandra Mondal – A Hindu youth was stabbed by Muslim attackers during a communal clash sparked by a dispute near a temple. He died while being taken to the hospital.
Ashok Chandra Baroi – A Hindu man was abducted, tortured, and murdered by Muslim criminals; rights groups alleged communal targeting due to his refusal to sell ancestral land.
Anil Chandra Paul – A Hindu trader was shot dead by Muslim assailants during a night attack on his home. Police confirmed the attackers’ identities and noted prior communal threats.
Shubho Chandra Das – A Hindu college student was beaten to death by a group of Muslim youths after being accused of insulting Islam on social media; police later stated the accusation was fabricated.
The pattern of targeted attacks highlights a disturbing rise in communal violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, with multiple killings, lynchings, and assaults occurring across different districts in late 2025 and early 2026.
