Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in the state capital on the 23rd to take part in a series of programmes, with the central highlight being the announcement of a comprehensive urban development plan for the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The visit fulfils an earlier political promise made by BJP state president Rajiv Chandrashekhar, who had stated during the civic body election campaign that if the BJP came to power in the corporation, the Prime Minister would visit Thiruvananthapuram within 45 days to unveil a major urban development blueprint. At the time, the promise was repeatedly ridiculed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which dismissed it as an unrealistic political claim.
However, the Prime Minister’s proposed visit has gained significance as it comes within a month of the BJP assuming mayoral leadership in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Modi is scheduled to address a large public gathering at the Thiruvananthapuram Central Stadium, where he will formally announce the city’s long-term development plan under BJP-led municipal governance. Party sources state that the plan is aimed at transforming the capital’s infrastructure, urban services, and overall development trajectory.
The programme is also expected to mark the formal launch of the BJP’s campaign activities for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had visited Thiruvananthapuram on the 11th, during which he participated in a BJP event attended by newly elected local body representatives. His visit also included meetings of the BJP core committee and NDA leaders, laying the groundwork for the next phase of political mobilisation.
Following these developments, the Prime Minister’s arrival is being viewed as a continuation of the party’s strategic push in the state. It is widely expected that Modi may also outline the BJP’s “Mission 2026” vision, aimed at securing victory in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Politically, the visit is considered highly significant, as it underscores the BJP’s intent to consolidate and expand the influence it has gained in the capital through municipal administration and translate it into electoral success at the state level. In addition to party-related events, the Prime Minister is also slated to participate in official government programmes during the visit. Reports indicate that he may announce new initiatives for Kerala in connection with Republic Day celebrations. After attending a programme in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, earlier in the day, Modi is expected to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram in the afternoon.
