Bengaluru: The recent visit of the German Federal Chancellor to Karnataka, a critical event with immense political, economic, and technological implications, has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders over the state’s handling of the event. BJP leader R. Ashok has condemned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for leaving the state capital to meet Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Mysuru, branding their actions as a serious dereliction of duty and a disregard for Karnataka’s interests.
According to Ashok, the visit of the German Chancellor represented a historic opportunity for Karnataka to attract global investments, boost industrial growth, generate employment, and strengthen international economic partnerships. “Any responsible Chief Minister would have understood the gravity of this occasion and ensured the state received maximum benefit,” Ashok said. “Instead, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar chose political optics and party loyalty over Karnataka’s development, leaving the state to miss out on critical opportunities.”
The opposition leader emphasised that leadership entails placing the state above personal political considerations. He noted that welcoming the leader of the world’s fourth-largest economy is not merely ceremonial but carries the potential to shape long-term strategic and technological growth in Karnataka. By prioritizing a meeting with Rahul Gandhi over facilitating and participating in the Chancellor’s engagements, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister demonstrated misplaced priorities that have consequences for the state’s economic and industrial landscape.

Ashok further criticised the CM and DCM for undermining the perception of Karnataka as a forward-looking and investment-friendly state. “The world watches how state leaders handle international dignitaries. Choosing political considerations over global opportunities signals to investors that political agendas take precedence over economic development,” he said. The move, according to the BJP leader, reflects a pattern of Congress leadership consistently prioritising internal party optics over the welfare and progress of the state.
The German Chancellor’s visit included discussions on potential collaborations in sectors like manufacturing, technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure development, all areas where Karnataka has a competitive advantage. Ashok argued that the absence of the state’s top leadership from such critical meetings risks losing tangible benefits in these sectors. “Jobs, investments, and future growth of Karnataka’s youth cannot be sacrificed for political pageantry,” he asserted.
R Ashok also highlighted that this is not merely a political lapse but an affront to the state’s dignity and responsibility. “Karnataka deserves leaders who understand the weight of global engagements, who put state interests first, and who do not subordinate them to party considerations. A state cannot afford leaders who measure every action by political convenience rather than developmental necessity,” he said.
He expressed concern that such misjudgments could have long-term implications for Karnataka’s positioning on the global stage. With other states actively courting international leaders and investors, Congress’s focus on internal political optics risks leaving Karnataka lagging behind in economic and technological development. Ashok warned that repeated prioritization of party agendas over state responsibilities could erode investor confidence, affect industrial growth, and deny employment opportunities to thousands of young professionals in the state.
The opposition also pointed out that this incident is indicative of a larger trend where the Congress high command’s directives overshadow governance priorities. Ashok argued that it is the duty of state leadership to assert Karnataka’s interests, ensuring that international visits and engagements are leveraged to the fullest for the state’s benefit. “Instead, we see the state’s highest offices focused on pleasing party leadership and political allies rather than seizing transformative opportunities,” he said.
