Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran has written a letter dated December 31 to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention over what he described as a series of violent and heinous incidents in Tamil Nadu that have raised serious concerns about public safety.
Referring to specific cases, Nagendran said that on December 28, a 22-year-old migrant labourer from West Bengal, Suraj, employed at a hotel in Coimbatore, was assaulted by two individuals following a dispute involving an auto rickshaw. He said the victim sustained grievous injuries and later succumbed while undergoing treatment on December 30.
He also cited another incident on December 27, in which a migrant worker from Odisha was attacked by youths at Thiruttani Railway Station in Thiruvallur district after the guest worker objected to the youths shooting reels. The assailants were reportedly under the influence of ganja. He further referred to an incident on December 30 at the same railway station, where two youths allegedly under the influence of alcohol attacked a passenger.
The people of Tamil Nadu are in grave distress due to the complete breakdown of the law and order situation in the state.

Nagendran said these incidents reflected a disturbing pattern of increasing attacks on migrant workers in Tamil Nadu. He alleged that the situation was being compounded by rising drug abuse among youngsters and the failure of the law enforcement machinery.
He further alleged that since the DMK assumed power, racial and ethnic statements made by individuals holding positions of authority had contributed to hostility against migrant workers.
The BJP leader also recalled other security-related incidents, including the bomb blast at the Kottai Eswaran Temple in Coimbatore and the arrest of individuals allegedly linked to extremist activities operating under the guise of educational institutions. Frequent reports of robberies, murders of elderly persons, daylight killings, and sexual offences against women and children, he said, underscored the seriousness of the situation.

Stating that the general public, particularly vulnerable sections such as women and children, were feeling increasingly unsafe, Nagendran requested HM Amit Shah to intervene and take appropriate action to restore public order and ensure the safety and security of residents in Tamil Nadu.
In yet another incident triggering concern over the safety of migrant workers, two labourers from Odisha were brutally attacked with weapons by an unidentified gang near Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district on the night of December 30.
Cuttack natives Moni Sharan and Sushanth, employees of a private company, had reportedly gone to the Vaigai riverbank near Mannalur late in the evening to attend to nature’s call when they were allegedly attacked. Police claimed the attackers were under the influence of liquor and said the assailants attacked the guest workers without provocation using weapons.
Both men sustained severe injuries to multiple parts of their bodies and were referred to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital, where they are currently undergoing intensive treatment.
Meanwhile, a Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson, Prasad, urged the state government to enforce youth policing, intensify the crackdown on drugs, and introduce moral education.
He said Tamil Nadu must immediately strengthen intelligence units, mandate proactive surveillance of high-risk youth, and ensure swift and uncompromising action against weapon displays and threats.
Prasad also called for holding social media platforms accountable, urging authorities to summon technology companies for questioning. He said the School Education Department must urgently mandate compulsory classes across all schools emphasising human values, compassion, dharma, strong anti-drug awareness, legal consequences, and ethics of justice.
He further alleged that cinema glorifying violence was contributing to a culture of brutality, claiming that young people were imitating violent imagery normalised on screen.
According to him, this reflected a toxic mix of reel culture, drug abuse, and the glorification of violence.
Prasad alleged that the DMK government under CM M. K. Stalin had allowed this situation to persist through apathy and selective enforcement. He appealed for rigorous, duty-bound policing under existing laws, warning that anything less would perpetuate what he described as systemic decay.
Referring to the viral video related to Suraj’s attack, Prasad described it as a disturbing indictment of society. He alleged that an unarmed migrant worker was attacked for social media attention and claimed that, in some cases, police action had focused more on whistleblowers than perpetrators.
He criticised what he described as leniency shown to juvenile offenders and called for lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 15 for heinous crimes, arguing that existing measures emboldened repeat offences.
Prasad said these incidents were symptomatic of what he termed failed governance and demanded a high-level judicial probe into police failures, drug proliferation, and the overall collapse of law enforcement.
Recalling an earlier incident in the CM’s own Kolathur Assembly constituency, Prasad said intoxicated youths had earlier terrorised civilians with knives, but alleged that decisive action was not taken. He claimed that timely and strict enforcement at that stage could have prevented subsequent attacks.
