A phone call and a strategic message
Decoding the strategic intricacies of the phone conversation between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, geopolitical analysts assert that the call sends a strong strategic message from both New Delhi and Washington. The conversation between the leaders of the world’s largest and oldest democracy is specifically analysed in the backdrop of the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India.
With the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit on December 4 and 5, New Delhi displayed a strong diplomatic bonhomie and strategic significance with Moscow devoid of any external pressure. This partnership between PM Modi and President Putin sent a strong message to the West regarding strategic autonomy and diplomatic pragmatism. In fact, US President Donald Trump imposed a massive 25 per cent additional tariffs on India for purchasing the Russian oil, thus cumulating the total tariffs imposed on India to 50 per cent. Through the tariff tool the US aimed to threaten and warn India to distance itself from Russia or the anti-west camp.
However, India didn’t kneel down to the US pressure and upheld its strategic autonomy in order to ultimately secure the national interest and prosperity of its 1.4 billion populace. The latest visit of the Russian President to India sent the same message. The diplomatic acts and strategic choices or calculations of New Delhi are rooted in sovereignty and independence, but not in the demands of external forces. The latest phone call between PM Modi and Trump is thus decoded in this direction.
The message given by New Delhi seems to be well received by Washington. In the latest Congressional hearing on the India-US Strategic Partnership both Republican and Democrat representatives asserted the importance of the India-US strategic relations. Democrat leader Sydney Kamlager-Dove went a step ahead and criticised the approach of the Trump administration towards India. She reiterated that Washington with its actions towards New Delhi, is damaging one of the crucial alliances of the 21st century. She criticised Trump as the US President “who lost India”.
The latest phone call between PM Modi and Trump is thus also analysed as a geopolitical course correction by the US towards its India policy. India is the 4th largest economy of the world which is set to be the third largest in the near future. It is an emerging economic powerhouse and a key partner in the Indo-Pacific strategy too. Thus, the long-term partnership with India is critical to the US, beyond the short-term hegemonic gains. The latest phone call can be deemed in this lens, that the US is seeking to restore and recalibrate the ties with India in the aftermath of all the irrational tariff tussle and illogical trade war. Though, both nations are in the midst of trade negotiations and are yet to ink the trade deal, the derailed bilateral relation seems to be back on track with strong strategic autonomy and diplomatic firmness exhibited by India, coupled with a comparitive meltdown and strategic course correction channelised by the US.
