PM Modi-President Trump phone call: Underscores strategic pragmatism by India and geopolitical rectification by the US

On December 11, Prime Minister Modi and the US President Donald Trump held a phone call. In the backdrop of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s latest visit to India, the conversation between PM Modi and President Trump is deciphered as a symbol of strategic pragmatism by New Delhi and a geopolitical course correction by Washington which had hitherto derailed the bilateral momentum with India by unleashing tariff tussle and trade hiccups

Both leaders reviewed the progress of the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the United States. They also reiterated to keep up the full momentum of the bilateral partnership for the in order to realize mutual benefit. Prime Minister Modi and President Trump also expressed satisfaction and confidence in the path in which India-US bilateral partnership is evolving.

— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) December 11, 2025

Both leaders exchanged views on a wide range of potential sectors of cooperation including critical technologies, energy, defence, security etc. They also reviewed the status and implementation strategy with respect to India-US COMPACT(Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology). Apart from the bilateral issues both leaders also shared views on various global challenges and resolved to work closely to counter the emerging problems and challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the conversation with President Trump as “warm and engaging”. “Had a warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity”, wrote PM Modi on the X social media platform. A phone call and a strategic message

Decoding the strategic intricacies of the phone conversation between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, geopolitical analysts assert that the call sends a strong strategic message from both New Delhi and Washington. The conversation between the leaders of the world’s largest and oldest democracy is specifically analysed in the backdrop of the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India.

With the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit on December 4 and 5, New Delhi displayed a strong diplomatic bonhomie and strategic significance with Moscow devoid of any external pressure. This partnership between PM Modi and President Putin sent a strong message to the West regarding strategic autonomy and diplomatic pragmatism. In fact, US President Donald Trump imposed a massive 25 per cent additional tariffs on India for purchasing the Russian oil, thus cumulating the total tariffs imposed on India to 50 per cent. Through the tariff tool the US aimed to threaten and warn India to distance itself from Russia or the anti-west camp.

However, India didn’t kneel down to the US pressure and upheld its strategic autonomy in order to ultimately secure the national interest and prosperity of its 1.4 billion populace. The latest visit of the Russian President to India sent the same message. The diplomatic acts and strategic choices or calculations of New Delhi are rooted in sovereignty and independence, but not in the demands of external forces. The latest phone call between PM Modi and Trump is thus decoded in this direction.

The message given by New Delhi seems to be well received by Washington. In the latest Congressional hearing on the India-US Strategic Partnership both Republican and Democrat representatives asserted the importance of the India-US strategic relations. Democrat leader Sydney Kamlager-Dove went a step ahead and criticised the approach of the Trump administration towards India. She reiterated that Washington with its actions towards New Delhi, is damaging one of the crucial alliances of the 21st century. She criticised Trump as the US President “who lost India”.

The latest phone call between PM Modi and Trump is thus also analysed as a geopolitical course correction by the US towards its India policy. India is the 4th largest economy of the world which is set to be the third largest in the near future. It is an emerging economic powerhouse and a key partner in the Indo-Pacific strategy too. Thus, the long-term partnership with India is critical to the US, beyond the short-term hegemonic gains. The latest phone call can be deemed in this lens, that the US is seeking to restore and recalibrate the ties with India in the aftermath of all the irrational tariff tussle and illogical trade war. Though, both nations are in the midst of trade negotiations and are yet to ink the trade deal, the derailed bilateral relation seems to be back on track with strong strategic autonomy and diplomatic firmness exhibited by India, coupled with a comparitive meltdown and strategic course correction channelised by the US.
