Tamil Nadu: Police detain Hindu Munnani cadres as anger grows over DMK stance in Thirupparankundram Deepam row

The standoff over the Karthigai Deepam ritual at Thirupparankundram intensified on December 7, with police detaining hundreds of Hindu Munnani cadres across Tamil Nadu. The arrests followed statewide demonstrations condemning the DMK government and CM Stalin for what protesters described as its refusal to comply with the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court’s directive to light the ‘Karthigai Deepam’ at the ‘Deepathoon’ atop the hill at the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swami Temple, one of the six abodes of Bhagwan Murugan.

Deepam dispute

As documented in earlier reports, the dispute began when Hindu organisations, including Hindu Munnani, sought the reinstatement of the centuries-old practice of lighting the Deepam on the ancient stone lamp pillar at the hilltop. The Madurai Bench had permitted the ritual after observing that no substantial law-and-order concerns were raised by local residents. Despite this, the DMK administration challenged the order before the Division Bench and later escalated the matter to the Supreme Court.

The apex court declined to take up the case urgently, leaving the original order intact. Contempt proceedings before Justice G. R. Swaminathan remain pending, awaiting the Supreme Court’s final view.

Hindu groups allege that the government’s objections were “unfounded”, noting that “none of a single Muslim in Madurai voiced against the HC orders”, and accuse the State of creating a communal angle to block a long-standing Hindu custom.

Protests and arrests across Tamil Nadu

Hindu Munnani, one of the petitioners seeking implementation of the custom at Murugan temple, accused the DMK government and its leadership of “a wanton and deliberate move to deny the rights of Hindus to appease the Muslims”. The organisation announced large-scale protests, arguing that “it is a pity Hindus had to go to courts to assert their rights”.

As demonstrations began, police detained participants at multiple locations. Officials also enforced restrictions after denying permission for the protests, reportedly following directives from senior leadership. Cadres were rounded up, some physically lifted and bundled into waiting police vehicles. Heavy deployment of police was seen across districts where the protests were scheduled, and posters supporting the agitation were removed in certain places.

Critics contrasted the police action with earlier permissions granted for the funeral procession of Coimbatore serial bomb blast prime accused Batsha, alleging selective enforcement. Protesters argued that they were denied the right to express dissent “in a democratic way”, while “it allows protest in support of Palestine and against Israle accusing of genocide”.

Statewide detentions

In Chennai, protests were held in Tambaram, Nungambakkam and other locations, with senior functionaries detained.

In Thoothukudi, Hindu Munnani member A. S. Madan reportedly collapsed after alleged police high-handedness during the protest and was later hospitalised with breathing difficulties.

Madurai / Chennai updates:

In Tiruchi city, over 100 members were arrested near the MGR statue in Marakkadai within the Gandhi Market police station limits. The demonstration was led by district executive committee member Manojkumar.

As per sources, police reported 40 arrests in Pudukottai, around 80 in Viralimalai, and about 70 in Karambakudi. In Ariyalur district alone, approximately 110 cadres were detained near the Anna statue in the town. Arrests were also made in Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam.

Hindu Munnani alleges police excess

Hindu Munnani State president Kadeswara Subramaniam, in a statement, said, “We strongly condemn fascist attitude of DMK government. It is stifling of the democratic voices. Instead of honouring the court orders, the government prevented the devotees from lighting the lamp at the site by invoking Sec 144 orders… Such actions of few police officers have made the public to lose confidence in them.”

He alleged house surveillance and restriction of movement of cadres in Tenkasi, Ariyalur and Perambalur from Saturday night. In Coimbatore Selvapuram, he stated that Asst Commissioner of Police Mageswaran “brutally attacked the functionaries… slapped on the face our cadre Sathis besides hitting him with his legs… snatched all their phones and deleted the videos”.

He further added, “Police can only arrested if they protest without permission but they can’t be hit by police. He behaved like a DMK cadres not as a police officer… In Thoothukudi, Asst. Superintendent of police Arun assaulted dist. Secretary Arunachalam resulting breathlessness condition… In Chennai, inspector Subramaniam hit an advocate Rithesh on his nose and used abusive languages… In Madurai where police torn the shirt of BKS national president Perumal… In Pudukottai, inspector Sugumar told the cadres ‘you can’t light the lamp (local slang)…’. A video in this regard has gone viral. In Tiruchi, SI Dhanapal hit TamilVanan besides using filthy languages. In Kamudi, in the presence of police, DMK functionary Vasudevan issued threats to Hindu Munnani arrested cadres and used abusive language.”
