New Delhi: At least seven Maoists were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh Bijapur district, official said on December 3.

Tragically, 3 jawans of the District Reserve Guards (DRG) were also martyred during the gun battle which is still reported to be underway.

The encounter broke out when a joint team of security forces comprising of personnel from DRG Dantewada-Bijapur, Special Task Force (STF), and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), an elite unit of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was out on an anti-Maoist campaign.

A fierce exchange of fire broke out between the security personnel and Maoists in the Gangloor area of West Bastar division along the Bijapur-Danteada inter-district border at around 9 in the morning leading to neutralisation of at least 7 Maoists.

According to preliminary information, bodies of 7 Maoists have been recovered by the security team. The number of fatalities on the Maoist’s side is expected to rise as forces have reportedly surrounded a large number of Naxal cadres. The forces have also recovered weapons from the site of the gunfight.

Three DRG personnel including Head Constable Monu Vadadi and Constable Dukaru Gonde lost their lives during the gunfight. Two other personnel have also sustained injuries in the skirmish.

Reinforcement teams have been rushed to the spot as the operation continues. More details about the encounter are still awaited.

More than 260 Maoists were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Chhattisgarh since the beginning of this year alone. Majority of the gun battles have taken place in state’s Bastar division which comprises of seven districts. The Bastar region was long considered the strongest den of the extremists where the forces have managed to make significant inroads in recent times, neutralising several key commanders of the outlawed group.
