KASHI: 19-year-old Vedamurti Devavrat Mahesh Rekhe from Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, has achieved what only a handful of individuals have accomplished across millennia. His flawless completion of the Dandakrama Parayanam one of the rarest, most intricate and revered recitative traditions of the Shukla Yajurveda (Madhyandina branch)—has drawn admiration from scholars, saints, national leaders, and Vedic institutions across India.
The feat involved reciting nearly 2,000 mantras, comprising over 25 lakh padas, combined with mastery over eight complex Vikritipathas, all performed over 50 uninterrupted days. The accomplishment is being celebrated as the first classically pure performance of Dandakrama Parayanam in almost 200 years.

The official X handle of Sringeri Math acknowledged the achievement, describing Devavrat’s recitation as “flawless and completed in the shortest span in history.”
Kashi witnessed an extraordinary celebration as the young scholar was felicitated in a grand ceremony blessed by the Jagadguru Shankaracharyas of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham. Devavrat was honoured with a golden bracelet worth Rs 5 lakh and a cash prize of Rs 1,11,116.
A special message of blessings from Sringeri Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahasannidhanam was delivered by Asthana Vidwan Dr. Tangirala Shivakumar Sharma.
The felicitation was accompanied by a spectacular procession from Rathayatra Crossing to Mahmoorganj, transforming the streets of Varanasi into a vibrant Vedic festival. Over 500 Vedic students, accompanied by traditional instruments and shankhadwani, led the procession as devotees showered flowers and welcomed the yatra with devotion.

Scholars emphasised that Dandakrama, known as the crown of Vedic recitation due to its intricate svara patterns and phonetic precision, has been performed only three times in recorded history making Devavrat’s accurate rendition all the more momentous.
Born into a distinguished Vedic family, Devavrat is the son and disciple of Vedabrahmasri Mahesh Chandrakant Rekhe, chief examiner of the Shukla Yajurveda Madhyandina Shakha examinations under the Veda Poshaka Sabha of Sringeri Peetham. Raised within the discipline of the Guru-Parampara, his childhood was shaped by:
- Pre-dawn Vedic recitations
- Rigorous phonetic and svara training
- Memory and breath-control exercises
- Deep immersion in ancient knowledge systems
By age 14, he had mastered advanced recitation patterns that take most scholars decades. By age 17, he had completed significant Vedic studies. At 19, he was prepared to attempt the Dandakrama a challenge even seasoned acharyas rarely undertake.
For the Rekhe family, this achievement symbolises the continuation of a 1,000-year-old lineage of Vedic wisdom. The Dandakrama Parayanam is considered near-superhuman due to:
1. Perfect pronunciation of 2,000 mantras: A single phonetic error can invalidate the entire recitation.
2. Mastery of 8 Vikritipathas: Each involves advanced mathematical, phonetic, and tonal permutations of mantras.
3. 50 days of non-stop recitation

4. Preservation of classical purity: Sringeri Math notes that such pure execution has been attempted successfully only thrice in history.
From October 2 to November 30, the Vallabharam Shaligram Sangved Vidyalaya in Varanasi turned into a sanctified space of uninterrupted chanting. Scholars visiting the venue described the atmosphere as “charged with sacred energy.”
When the final mantra was recited, an emotional silence filled the hall before Devavrat’s father embraced him—a moment many described as symbolising “the continuity of civilisation.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the historic achievement on X, calling it, “An achievement that will be remembered by coming generations.” He added that every Indian who cherishes the nation’s cultural heritage should be proud of the young Vedic scholar.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on X, highlighted the historical rarity of the feat, noting that the classical Dandakrama has been performed only three times in known history, and praised Devavrat’s “dedication, discipline, focus and rigour.”
