At least eight people were killed and several others injured in an explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on the evening of November 10, prompting the US Embassy in New Delhi to issue a security advisory for its citizens.
In its statement, the embassy urged US nationals to “avoid the areas surrounding the Red Fort and remain vigilant, particularly in crowded locations and places frequently visited by tourists.”
The explosion took place around 6:52 pm near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station. According to officials, a slow-moving car halted at a traffic signal before suddenly exploding. The blast set the vehicle on fire, damaged three nearby cars, and shattered several streetlights, causing panic across the densely populated Old Delhi area.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed that teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been deployed to determine the cause of the explosion.
“At around 6:52 p.m., an explosion occurred in a slow-moving vehicle near the Red Fort Metro Station, damaging nearby vehicles. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates are being shared with the Home Minister,” Golcha said.
Officials from the Delhi Police Special Cell and forensic experts are currently collecting evidence to identify the source of the blast and ascertain whether it was the result of foul play.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the victims.
“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
The Prime Minister also stated that he had reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah and senior officials, assuring that relief and rescue operations are in progress and all necessary assistance is being provided to those affected.
