Shashi Tharoor praises LK Advani on his birthday for his nation-building legacy; Congress in dock

Congress MP Dr Shashi Tharoor’s warm tribute to senior BJP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani on his 98th birthday has sparked widespread discussion across India’s political spectrum. Praising Advani for his decisive role in shaping modern Bharat’s political direction, Tharoor described him as a “nation-builder” whose contributions cannot be reduced to any single incident or controvers

Dr Shashi Tharoor’s remarks on the occasion of LK Advani’s 98th birthday have ignited a national conversation about political maturity and historical fairness in evaluating leaders. In a social media post that many have termed as “politically courageous,” Tharoor lauded Advani’s lifelong service to the nation, his simplicity, and his steadfast commitment to democratic values.

Tharoor wrote that Advani’s leadership “guided Bharat towards a new political direction,” acknowledging his role in shaping contemporary Indian democracy. He further said, “It is not fair to confine a leader’s entire life to a single incident or controversy. Just as Nehru and Indira Gandhi are not defined by isolated episodes, Advaniji too deserves to be seen in the full measure of his contributions.”

Political analysts note that Tharoor’s remarks signal a rare gesture of cross-party respect in an increasingly polarised climate. Many believe the Congress MP’s words recognise the enduring impact of Advani’s Ayodhya Rath Yatra, which Tharoor described as having awakened “modern Bharat’s cultural spirit” from beneath the debris of old divisions.

Public response to Tharoor’s statement has been overwhelmingly positive, with citizens and commentators praising his “political integrity” and ability to appreciate leadership beyond party lines. “This is an example of statesmanship over partisanship,” said one observer.

Within the Congress, reactions have been measured. The party has not issued a formal rebuke but clarified that “Dr Tharoor has expressed his individual opinion.” However, insiders admit the remarks have created unease among certain sections of the leadership, recalling earlier controversies when Tharoor’s praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his participation in foreign delegations led to discomfort within the party.
