This year’s Muhurat trading, eagerly awaited by stock investors across India, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21, coinciding with the Deepawali celebrations in India. Investors regard this as the most auspicious time to buy new shares and enhance existing stock portfolios. Muhurat trading will run from 1.45 pm to 2.45 pm on Tuesday. The stock markets will remain closed on Tuesday in observance of Deepawali and on Wednesday, October 22, for ‘Diwali Bali Pratipada’.

It is rare for the stock market to remain closed for two consecutive days. Despite Tuesday being a holiday, a special trading session of one hour will be organised, this is the Muhurat trading. Conducted annually on Deepawali, Muhurat trading marks the beginning of the ‘Samvat’ year according to the Hindu calendar. Traditionally, the session begins after pujas are offered to Goddess Lakshmi, symbolising prosperity and wealth. This year, the pre-open session for Muhurat trading will be from 1.30 pm to 1.45 pm, followed by one hour of normal trading. The market will remain open until 2.55 pm to allow investors to make final modifications to share purchase or sale transactions. Indians regard this one-hour window as an auspicious ‘Muhurat’ for initiating new business ventures, investments, or purchases of assets such as houses, vehicles, clothing and jewellery.

In previous years, Muhurat trading generally took place from 6 pm to 7 pm. This year, the afternoon timing is unusual and noteworthy. Historically, the Sensex and Nifty have shown positive trends during Muhurat trading. Out of the 13 Muhurat sessions from 2012 to 2024, 10 witnessed gains. In the 2024 Muhurat trading, the Sensex rose 335.06 points (+0.42%) to 79,724.12, while the Nifty gained 99 points (+0.41%) to 24,304. Currently, the Sensex stands at 83,952, and the Nifty at 25,709.

Positive Outlook for Samvat-2082

Deepawali this year marks the beginning of Samvat-2082. Over the past year, silver has delivered the highest returns to investors, up 72%, while gold has gained 63%. The record-breaking rise in gold and silver has been a major boon for investors. Historically, from one Deepawali to the next, gold and silver have mostly provided positive returns over the last decade. However, the gains over the past year have been exceptional. Gold’s 63% increase surpasses its previous peak of 33% in 2020, while silver’s 72% gain exceeds its best past performance of 37% in 2020. In comparison, the Sensex has gained only 6.3% and the Nifty 5.8% over the same period. From the Muhurat trading of 2023 to 2024, investor wealth, or the combined market value of companies listed on the BSE, rose by Rs 144.44 lakh crore to Rs 466.92 lakh crore. However, over the past year, the increase has been more modest, at Rs 18.82 lakh crore. The market’s total value at the last trading close stood at Rs 448.10 lakh crore.

Several factors point to a positive outlook for the Indian stock markets in Samvat-2082. These include GST exemptions, the ongoing festive season, negotiations on India-US and India-EU trade agreements, falling crude oil prices, the return of peace in Central Asia and efforts to end the Ukraine-Russia war. These developments are expected to support investor confidence and offer growth prospects for the year ahead. Muhurat trading, thus, continues to be more than just a symbolic tradition, it is a celebration of new beginnings in the financial markets, reflecting optimism and cultural significance alike.
