Guwahati: A wave of tension is brewing across Assam as a section of people are attempting to exploit the mysterious death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg to stir unrest. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma who is in Delhi said that the violence incident that erupted in Baksa district on Wednesday is a matter of big worry. The prime accused of singer Zubeen Garg’s death Sidharth Sharma and event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta along with three more accused were shifted to Baksa district jail on October 15.
People gathered in front of the newly constructed jail to protest demanding immediate justice for singer Zubeen Garg. But in the evening the situation suddenly turned violent and a group of people started throwing stones at the police. The violent mob also set ablaze several police and media vehicles. Police had to resort to lathi charge and blank fire to control the situation. Several police, journalists and protesters were injured in the incident. The administration imposed restrictions in the district under section 163 of BNS. Internet connection was restricted in the district.
CM Sarma said that in the Indian judicial system quick judgement is not possible. We need to follow the judicial procedure. But political parties like Congress and others are instigating common people to seek intense justice and as a result violent incidents took place in Baksa. He appealed to the people that don’t fall in the trap of the leaders who want to make Zubeen’s death a political issue and wants to keep the issue alive till 2026 Assam election. These people are trying to create a Nepal like situation but Assam police SIT is thoroughly investigating the matter and will give due justice to the beloved singer.
It should be mentioned that state Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi had commented twice that followers of Zubeen Garg are keeping patience and the violent situation can arise any time.
CM Sarma further said that this type of violence will bring Assam backward as it was done during the anti-CAA protest. Earlier CM Sarma in Delhi met Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and High Commissioner of Singapore to discuss the further legal procedure of the investigation of the death of singer Zubeen Garg. CM also met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and apprised him on the situation of the state.
The popular singer died in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea. The mysterious death of the popular singer created a wave of anger amongst his followers. 7 people have been arrested by SIT and over 50 people were quizzed by the investigating team so far.
