Bhubaneswar: The horrific gang rape of an Odia medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal, has sparked widespread outrage across Odisha. The state government has taken a strong and compassionate stand, assuring every possible support to the survivor and her family while pressing for swift justice. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, and the Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) have all stepped in with decisive measures.

CM Mohan Majhi Speaks to Victim and Her Mother

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi personally spoke over the phone with the survivor, her mother, and Odisha State Commission for Women Chairperson Shobhana Mahanty. Extending emotional support to the survivor, the Chief Minister said, “Do not worry. The Odisha Government stands fully with you.”

He assured that the state government would take full responsibility for the survivor’s education and well-being, adding that all efforts would be made to ensure her speedy recovery. It is noteworthy that the Chief Minister had earlier spoken to the survivor’s father, assuring him of complete government support in their pursuit of justice. The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Durgapur.

Deputy CM Pravati Parida Engages with NCW Chief

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and dispatched a fact-finding team to Durgapur. Based on the team’s findings, the NCW has issued a series of strong recommendations to the West Bengal Government.

These include a fair and expeditious investigation and prosecution, ensuring the safety and security of the survivor, providing adequate medical care, offering academic relief, conducting a comprehensive institutional security audit, and establishing strict institutional accountability.

Deputy CM Parida stated that the Odisha Government is closely monitoring developments in the case and will continue to extend all necessary support to ensure justice for the survivor.

Odisha SCW Team Meets Survivor’s Family in Durgapur

In a parallel development, a three-member delegation from the Odisha State Commission for Women, led by Chairperson Shobhana Mahanty, visited Durgapur on Monday evening to meet the survivor’s family. The team interacted with the survivor’s relatives and inquired about her physical and mental condition.

Speaking to the media before entering the hospital, Mahanty said, “The Commission stands firmly with the survivor and her family. We will ensure that she gets justice.” She condemned the crime as “barbaric and deeply painful,” and assured that the Odisha Government would extend full support to the survivor’s family.

Mahanty added that her visit aimed to assess the survivor’s health condition, interact directly with her parents, and review the progress of the investigation. She said, “I will inquire into the medical treatment she has received, her mental well-being, and the investigation’s status. A detailed report will be submitted to the Odisha Government to facilitate further action.”

The coordinated efforts between the Odisha Government, the National Commission for Women, and the State Commission for Women demonstrate a united front against crimes targeting women. As the investigation progresses, the Odisha Government has reiterated that it will continue to stand by the survivor and her family until justice is fully served.
