In a major diplomatic revamp intended towards refurnishing and strengthening the India-Canada ties, Foreign Minister of Canada, Anita Anand is on a bilateral visit to New Delhi. On October 13, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held bilateral discussions with his Canadian counterpart. Both leaders discussed a wide range of issues from trade and investment to energy and security. They also agreed to restore the bilateral and diplomatic ties for the sake of mutual strategic benefit and also in the wake of the spiking geopolitical volatilities.

India and Canada relations was hit an all-time low and there were diplomatic expulsions during the rule of the former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Canadian government without evidence alleged that Indian government was involved in the killing of the Khalistani extremists who were apparently Canadian citizens. Since then, New Delhi-Ottawa relations experienced a “chilling phase”. However, with the new regime in Ottawa under Prime Minister Mark Carney, India-Canada relations have been seeing a gradual revamp and swift diplomatic discussions and exchanges, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi being invited for the G-7 summit at Kananaskis, Canada.

Trade, tech and security on the bilateral agenda

During the bilateral discussions in New Delhi EAM Jaishankar asserted, “Our meeting today continues the constructive dialogues that we have over phone calls. India–Canada bilateral relations have been steadily progressing in the last two months. We are working to restore and reinvigorate the mechanisms necessary to advance our partnership”. EAM Jaishankar also highlighted the recent discussions between the National Security Advisors of both the countries in light of addressing the security concerns in Canada that India has repeatedly stressed upon.

Both sides also held detailed discussions to further accelerate the collaboration in the domain of trade, investment, civil nuclear deal, energy, technology, Artificial Intelligence etc. “India and Canada have a long tradition of being active in world affairs. We are members of the G20 and the Commonwealth. Our convergence in the Indo-Pacific is notable. We are proponents of effective multilateralism, climate action, and the SDG Agenda 2030”, EAM Jaishankar further added. Both Ministers also discussed the comprehensive roadmap to take forward the New Delhi-Ottawa ties.

Both sides also discussed the ongoing geopolitical and geo-economic tensions across the globe and reiterated the need to recalibrate the India-Canada relations in this light for bilateral benefit and also to de-risk and stabilize the international economy.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand also assured to elevate the bilateral relations across the domains, in a holistic way. “This joint statement will discuss our mutual plans for re-engagement. It will inform Canadians and Indians alike that we are collectively committed to advancing this relationship now and in the long term, particularly when it comes to our mutual priorities in the Indo-Pacific,” Anita Anand added.

Post the discussion between both the Ministers, a Joint Statement was released. The statement agreed to work towards the restoration of stability in India-Canada relations. It focused a=on carrying forward the bilateral relations, in a constructive and balanced approach, by considering and addressing each other’s sensitivities and other concerns. “In keeping with the priorities that the Prime Ministers of India and Canada had set out for bringing momentum to the relationship, both sides, based on mutual respect for shared democratic values, the rule of law, and a commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, reached consensus on a New Roadmap for India-Canada relations”, the joint statement further added.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Anita Anand also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She affirmed to further build on the regained momentum in the India-Canada ties as per the vision of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The core focus of the bilateral relations will be law enforcement, security dialogue and consolidating economic partnership, Anita Anand added.
