It is ‘Mappls’, an indigenous alternative to the Google Maps. After Zoho and Arratai, the Mappls is another milestone in the path of indigenizing the tech ecosystem and seeking self-reliance.
On October 12, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology demonstrated the process of using ‘Mappls’. Thus, the government fosters ease of navigation and commutation for the citizens with an indigenous touch. On his X social media platform, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, posted a video and explained the features of the Mappls app. He also highlighted the unique features in the app that makes it stand out from its other competitors.

The unique feature of ‘Mappls’ that makes it stand out from other navigation apps is that it seeks to bridge the loopholes in other apps, including the Google Maps. The app also works in multi-storeyed buildings where it guides users’ way to different floors that they want to reach”, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw further added.
Data localization and security: Another pivotal feature of the Mappls is data localization. The key credentials and crucial details pertaining to the Indian citizens will be stored and secured within India. Thus, such home-grown apps boost the data privacy, data security and sovereignty paradigm of the country.
In the recent decades, with increasing geopolitical contestations, there is a spiking concern that crucial data about the masses can be illicitly used by foreign companies or their home countries to fulfill their hegemonic and geopolitical ambitions.
