Karnataka: Deve Gowda slams Congress over financial mismanagement, vows BJP-JD(S) alliance will remain strong

Former PM H.D. Deve Gowda accused the Congress government of pushing Karnataka into financial crisis through guarantee schemes, saying even its MLAs admit there's no money. Assuring the BJP-JD(S) alliance remains strong, he announced a women's convention on October 12 and vowed to personally review flood-hit Kalaburagi

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda launched a scathing attack on the Congress government on October 3, accusing it of pushing Karnataka into a severe financial crisis by implementing guarantee schemes without proper planning.

Addressing reporters at J.P. Bhavan, Gowda said, “I am not the one saying this. It is Congress legislators themselves who are admitting there is no money. The government is confused and unable to respond effectively to crises. At a time when floods and natural calamities hit the state, the government has the responsibility to extend maximum relief from its resources. But instead, we see only internal confusion and complaints of an empty treasury.”

Responding to speculation about the BJP-JD(S) alliance in view of the upcoming urban local body elections, Gowda assured that the coalition remains intact. “There is no cause for concern in our alliance. Whether it is zilla panchayat, taluk panchayat or assembly elections, the BJP-JD(S) alliance will continue. No one can alter my relationship with Prime Minister Modi. I have never spoken lightly of him and never will,” he clarified.

Gowda announced a massive women’s convention in Bengaluru on October 12, expected to draw at least 50,000 participants from across the state. “This is not just a show of strength; it is a message that we are ready for upcoming elections. If there are financial hurdles, I will take full responsibility. But this program must not fail,” he asserted, adding that the JD(S) is confident of winning at least 50 seats in the BBMP polls.

Flood damage review in Kalaburagi
Speaking on the recent floods, Gowda said he would personally visit Kalaburagi in the coming days to assess the ground situation. “The Chief Minister has conducted an aerial survey. I will not criticize that. But district in-charge ministers and officials must visit the affected areas to ensure relief reaches the victims. More than 50 people have died and crops across six districts have been destroyed. I will go myself to verify the reality and push for timely compensation,” he said.

He added that his son, former CM HD Kumaraswamy, has already written to the Center about crop losses. “I too will write to the Prime Minister. If necessary, I will personally meet him in Delhi. This is not about politics, it is about farmers’ survival,” Gowda said.

On elections and party leadership

On the controversial Bidadi township issue, Gowda declined to name individuals. “We are a small party, and our focus is to strengthen and protect it. Let the people give their verdict during elections. Until then, unnecessary discussions should be avoided,” he remarked.

On Kumaraswamy’s health, Gowda assured party workers that he had fully recovered. “Doctors have declared him fit for politics again. He will soon resume state tours. Meanwhile, Nikhil is working actively across constituencies after his electoral setbacks, showing the spirit of an experienced politician,” Gowda added.

Concluding, the JD(S) patriarch said his own health was stable apart from back pain, and the party would contest the upcoming BBMP polls with the aim of winning 50-60 seats. “The women’s wing is doing excellent work, and with their strength, we will move forward confidently,” he said.
