UP school burqa controversy: Parents meeting turns violent over hijab restrictions

A parents meeting at a private school in Kanpur turned into a heated controversy when Muslim women were denied entry for wearing burqas. According to reports, several female parents and students had arrived at the school in hijabs and burqas for the scheduled meeting on Saturday in the Charari area of Kanpur. However, the school management reportedly barred the women from entering, citing the institution’s dress code.

Angered by the refusal, the women staged a protest outside the school premises, drawing local attention. The incident was reported to Kanpur Cantt MLA Hasan Rumi, who intervened, while police officials arrived at the scene to mediate between the parties and calm the situation.

In the Kanpur case, the school management defended the ban, maintaining that the dress code must be uniform for all attendees, while parents and students contended that burqas and hijabs are a part of their religious identity.

The school principal clarified the institution’s position. She stated that the school has an equal number of Hindu and Muslim students, and no prior complaints of discrimination have ever been reported. According to the principal, issues began arising after the admission of children under the Right to Education (RTE) scheme, as these students reportedly choose the school themselves and sometimes attempt to bypass school regulations.

The principal explained that approximately 15 to 20 students who wear veils (niqabs) are assigned a separate room. They are asked to remove their veils in that room before entering their classrooms, a practice also followed by two Muslim teachers working at the school. During the parents’ meeting, school authorities politely requested parents to adhere to this existing protocol. However, according to the principal, some individuals created unnecessary commotion despite the request, leading to the protest outside the school.

Chakeri Police Station in-charge Santosh Kumar Shukla told media that parents were immediately informed to follow school rules, and both sides were counseled to prevent escalation. Recognising the sensitivity of the situation, the police officer also confirmed that a detailed report has been submitted to the Police Commissioner for further review.

In 2022, a university in Karnataka saw a major controversy when a Muslim student named Muskaan created a scene after being barred from wearing a burqa. The episode escalated when some Hindu students protested by wearing saffron shawls, prompting widespread media coverage and public demonstrations across India.
