In a massive embarrassment for the ruling Congress government in Karnataka, yet another party legislator has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Karwar Congress MLA Satish Sail was taken into custody after a marathon round of questioning in a money laundering case. This makes him the third Congress MLA to be arrested in less than two months, further deepening allegations that corruption has become a hallmark of the Siddaramaiah administration.
ED officials confirmed that Sail was summoned in connection with the case involving the illegal transportation of ore and disproportionate assets. His residence in Karwar was raided on August 13 and 14, during which investigators unearthed crores worth of unaccounted cash, gold ornaments, and incriminating documents. Raids were also conducted at locations linked to him in Goa, Mumbai, and Delhi. The officials later packed the seized money, jewellery, and documents in two large trunks and transported them to Bengaluru.
According to sources, the MLA failed to provide satisfactory answers about the source of the wealth. Following his questioning, he was formally arrested and will now be produced before a special court after a mandatory medical check-up.
The Congress is already reeling from the arrests of two of its MLAs in high-profile criminal and corruption cases.
- Chitradurga MLA Virendra Pappi was arrested last month in connection with the multi-crore online betting racket. He is currently lodged in Parappana Agrahara jail. ED officials claimed Pappi not only shielded the kingpins of the racket but also laundered the illicit earnings through shell companies.
- Hubballi-Dharwad MLA Vinay Kulkarni, a close associate of CM Siddaramaiah, was arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence in the Yogesh Gowda murder case. His bail plea was recently rejected, though he was granted two days’ parole for his son’s surgery.
Now, with the arrest of Satish Sail, the tally of Congress MLAs behind bars has risen to three. The BJP has mockingly branded this a “Jail Bharo Andolan of Congress MLAs,” warning that more legislators could soon join them as the ED and other central agencies intensify their probes.
The state BJP wasted no time in capitalising on the development. In a sharp post on X, the party said:
“The Congress MLA’s Jail Bharo movement is going on successfully. Three MLAs have already gone behind bars. Don’t be surprised if more of Siddaramaiah’s flock joins them soon.”

The opposition further accused CM Siddaramaiah of shielding corrupt legislators by forming Special Investigation Teams (SITs) that conveniently provide clean chits. “If there was no SIT, even Siddaramaiah would have been behind bars today,” BJP leaders taunted.
The BJP’s attack was sharpened by a fresh report in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam, where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his family were accused of benefiting from irregular land allocations. A single-member commission headed by Justice PN Desai submitted his findings, giving the CM a clean chit.
The report acknowledged that irregularities did occur—such as the use of denotified land without acquisition, a lack of departmental supervision, and delayed compensation, leading to substantial financial losses—but concluded that the responsibility lay with MUDA officials, not the Chief Minister.
