On September 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a joint telephone call with the President of the European Council, H.E. Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, H.E. Ursula von der Leyen, according to an official press release.
The leaders emphasised that as the world’s largest democratic forces, India and the European Union (EU) share a strong and close relationship rooted in trust, shared values, and a common vision for the future. They underlined the role of the India-EU Strategic Partnership in addressing global challenges, fostering stability, and promoting a rules-based order for mutual prosperity.
Welcoming progress in bilateral cooperation, the leaders highlighted key sectors including trade, technology, investment, innovation, sustainability, defence, security, and supply chain resilience. They reaffirmed their shared commitment towards an early conclusion of negotiations on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).

Building on the historic visit of the EU College of Commissioners to India in February, discussions also focused on organising the next India-EU Summit in India at an early date. Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to both leaders to visit India for the summit.
Regional and global developments also figured in the talks. The leaders exchanged views on efforts to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution and the early restoration of peace and stability. The leaders agreed to remain in touch, the release added.
