In a moment that many would have once deemed unthinkable, Hindus celebrated Krishna Janmashtami at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, the heart of Kashmir, in 2025. This development, while spiritual in nature, is deeply symbolic of a broader transformation occurring in the region, one that speaks volumes about the shifting ground realities under the Modi government.

For decades, the Kashmir Valley remained a sensitive, conflict-prone zone, with religious events by minority communities often subdued or restricted for fear of unrest. Lal Chowk, in particular, stood as a symbol of political volatility, a place where separatist slogans once echoed, and the hoisting of the national flag was itself a matter of fierce contestation.
That the same location has now witnessed peaceful Janmashtami celebrations, complete with devotional songs, processions, and a palpable sense of unity, is a milestone in the journey toward a new Kashmir. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, what was once thought impossible has been made possible through decisive governance, security reforms, and a vision of inclusive nationalism.
From conflict to coexistence
The abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 was a historic step that laid the foundation for this transformation. By removing the special status that kept J&K insulated from the rest of India, the Modi government sent a strong message: that Kashmir is, and will always remain, an integral part of India, not just territorially, but emotionally, culturally, and constitutionally.
Post-370, the Valley has witnessed a sharp decline in terror-related incidents, a resurgence in tourism, and a strengthening of democratic institutions. Grassroots development projects have taken root. Youth are being empowered through education and employment opportunities. And above all, a sense of normalcy, once elusive, is gradually returning to everyday life.
Celebrating culture without fear
Religious and cultural expression is a litmus test for any society’s freedom and tolerance. The ability for Hindus to openly celebrate Krishna Janmashtami at Lal Chowk, surrounded by security forces and even local participation, is proof that the environment in J&K has fundamentally changed.
The Janmashtami celebration in Srinagar is more than a religious observance; it is a statement. A statement that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not afraid to confront historical challenges with courage and conviction. It is a reflection of a confident, assertive Bharat that protects its civilisational heritage while moving towards a united future.
