Fatehpur tense as Islamists stone Hindus over claim of Thakur Ji temple beneath a Tomb

A historic-religious dispute has emerged in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur, where Hindu activists claim a structure marked as a tomb is in fact the ancient temple of Thakur Ji. The activists have vowed to reclaim their right to worship at the site

The city of Fatehpur is witnessing heightened security following a religious heritage dispute, after Hindu activists claimed that a structure claimed to be a tomb is historically the Thakur Ji temple. Members of local Hindu organisations gathered at the site on August 11, to perform prayers and rituals, saying their right to worship at what they believe to be an ancient place of Hindu devotion.

According to local accounts, tensions escalated when members of the Muslim community objected to the prayers, leading to stone-pelting incidents. Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) forces swiftly intervened to prevent further clashes, deploying personnel at all major intersections, marketplaces, and sensitive areas across the city.

The dispute gained momentum after activists from the Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations inspected the site and maintained that the structure’s origins are clearly that of a temple dedicated to Thakur Ji.

Dharmendra Singh, District Co-convenor of Bajrang Dal, said: “We will offer prayers here at noon. The administration will not be able to stop us. In the Hindu religion, no one can take away our right to offer prayers. This is our temple which they are referring to as a tomb.”

Activists believe that the temple was altered or repurposed during past periods of religious upheaval, and that restoring its original form is both a matter of faith and cultural justice.

District officials have initiated dialogues with community representatives to ensure peace while acknowledging that the matter touches deep religious sentiments. Heavy police deployment remains in place to avoid any untoward incident.

Local Hindu leaders have stressed that their movement is peaceful and rooted in the constitutional right to practice religion. They have also called for an archaeological survey of the site to determine its true historical identity.
