Koppal: A gruesome incident of interfaith violence has shocked the city of Koppal and sparked widespread condemnation. On the night of August 3, in a chilling act of brutality, a young Hindu man, Gavisiddappa Nayak, was hacked to death in front of a mosque in Ward No. 3 of Koppal city. The accused, Sadiq Kolkar, later surrendered to the police. The reason behind the murder: Gavisiddappa’s relationship with a Muslim girl.
The incident has left the town rattled and the communal fabric of the region strained. Police sources confirmed that the murder was not a spontaneous act but a premeditated killing. Sadiq, armed with a machete, reportedly lay in wait for Gavisiddappa near the mosque. When Gavisiddappa arrived on a bike via Bahaddur Bandi Road, Sadiq attacked him viciously, slitting his throat and ensuring his death on the spot.
The brutality of the act is unprecedented in Koppal. According to eyewitnesses and locals, this level of targeted violence has rarely been seen in the city’s history. Shockingly, Sadiq had even uploaded an intimidating video on his Instagram status, brandishing a machete, just hours before the attack raising serious questions about how police failed to intervene despite the apparent threat.
Love becomes the motive for hate
For over two years, Gavisiddappa, a youth from the Gauri Angala area, had reportedly been in a relationship with a minor Muslim girl. Their love had been the subject of several community meetings and panchayats. Despite social pressure and religious differences, the couple maintained their relationship, defying repeated opposition from the girl’s family and community.
Sources close to the families say that Sadiq himself was previously in a relationship with the same girl. After their relationship ended, the girl began seeing Gavisiddappa, which reportedly enraged Sadiq. There had been multiple confrontations between the two young men, but no preventive steps were taken either by the community leaders or by law enforcement. Eventually, Sadiq decided to take the law into his own hands, culminating in Sunday night’s murder.
After the murder, Sadiq voluntarily surrendered at the city police station, where he confessed to the killing. A complaint has been registered against him and four others under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Gavisiddappa belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, and the killing has also been viewed through the lens of caste and communal oppression.
Police recovered two machetes from the crime scene. However, investigators suspect Sadiq did not act alone. There is credible information suggesting that at least two other youths were involved in the attack, and a search is underway to apprehend them.
SP Dr. Ram Arasiddy and Ballari IGP Varthika Katiyar visited the spot soon after the incident, indicating the seriousness of the matter. Despite the swift response post-murder, questions are being raised about why the police failed to act on Sadiq’s threatening social media post.
A community on edge
The murder has escalated communal tensions in the area. Several community members have condemned the killing and demanded justice. The fact that this brutal act took place in front of a place of worship and stemmed from an interfaith relationship has only added fuel to the fire.
Relatives of the deceased, including Yamanurappa Nayak, a member of the Ojanahalli Gram Panchayat, have called the murder a failure of law enforcement and have demanded a high-level probe. The silence of some political and religious leaders on the issue has also drawn criticism.
