“Those who criticise the name ‘Bharat’ and the idea of ‘Bharat Mata’ are turning a blind eye to historical and cultural truth,” said Prajna Pravah National Coordinator J Nandakumar. He was speaking at the Mahi Municipal Town Hall during a presentation on ‘Vishala Bharat, Pavitra Bharat’ at the state ‘Padana Shibiram’ (Study camp) organised by the Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram.
Nandakumar Ji emphasised that both the name ‘Bharat’ and the idea of the nation are as ancient as the Rigveda. The word ‘Bharat’ first appeared in the Rigveda and was used by ascetics and the sages who composed the Upanishads. Those who viewed Bharat as a mother also developed the concept of Bharat Mata. According to him, Bharat is essentially a cultural and spiritual nation, not merely a political entity.
He asserted that questioning whether the nation’s name is ‘Bharat’ is akin to asking for proof of the sun rising in the east or a river flowing downhill. “Bharat is an eternal truth and a lived reality. No matter how far back in history we go, its presence is clear and visible,” he said. The greatness of Bharat, he noted, is reflected in the Rigveda, Vayu Purana, Mahabharata, and other sacred texts. He also cited the Bharat Tantric tradition, where 51 sacred syllables are tied to the body in worship, symbolising the 51 Shakti Peethas spread across Bharat.
He further remarked that the unity of Bharat was vividly witnessed during the freedom struggle, which spanned the entire nation. Poets from every state composed verses glorifying Bharat Mata. Swami Vivekananda, he recalled, had called upon the people of Bharat to dedicate themselves to the worship of Bharat Mata for fifty years instead of worshipping all the gods. Prominent figures such as B.R. Ambedkar, Swami Vivekananda, Maharishi Aurobindo, and Rajaji all revered Bharat as Mother.
Nandakumar Ji pointed out that the reverence for Bharat Mata can be found not only in the Vedas but also in the Indian Constitution and all great Indian thinkers, including Dr. Ambedkar, recognised and upheld the idea of Bharat’s cultural unity.
