PM Modi urges ‘Swadeshi’ push amid US tariff war, calls for economic self-reliance & national unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the need to promote ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous) products as the world grapples with economic uncertainty. His remarks came in the wake of US President Donald Trump announcing a 25 per cent tariff on goods exported from India to the United States, along with additional penalties for India’s continued import of Russian oil and defence equipment.

“The global economy is experiencing a period of significant instability. There is an atmosphere of uncertainty everywhere. In such a situation, every nation is focusing on safeguarding its own interests. As India moves closer to becoming the third-largest economy in the world, we too must remain vigilant and prioritise our economic interests,” the Prime Minister said.

He called upon citizens, political parties, and leaders to unite in advancing the country’s growth. “Everyone has a responsibility as a citizen. Whichever party or leader genuinely wants to see India become the third-largest economy must advocate for national interest and inspire the public to commit to purchasing Swadeshi products,” he said.

“When we go to buy something, there should be only one standard, that we choose products made with the sweat and talent of Indians. Whatever is made by our people, with their skills and labour, is Swadeshi for us,” he declared, reiterating the importance of the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement.

Addressing the business community directly, the Prime Minister said, “I earnestly request my brothers and sisters in trade and commerce, during this period of global instability, let us resolve to sell only indigenous products. This will be a true service to the nation. From now on, every moment, we must commit to purchasing only Swadeshi goods. This will be a fitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.”

Calling for a stronger push towards the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Modi urged the people to pledge that every new item they purchase should be Swadeshi. He appealed to traders and sellers across the country to take a firm decision to stock and promote only locally made products. He concluded by reminding the nation that the vision of a developed India can only be achieved through the collective commitment of its people.
