Lakhs of devotees from across the state converged in Tiruchendur on 7 July to witness the Kumbabhishekam of the Bhagwan Subramaniya Swamy Temple, which was performed between 6:15 am and 6:50 am. The temple had last undergone the ritual 16 years ago. However, it is learnt that the rituals were not performed as per Agamic shastras, but instead followed a Tamil system.
Devotees had started arriving since June 6. By today morning, a sea devotees spread across the four lanes of the temple and the promenade nearby. The chants of “Arohara”, “Vetri Vel”, “Veera Vel” reverberated through the air, creating a divine vibration. Tiruchendur is the second of the six abodes (Ārūpaḍai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, the first being Thiruparankundram. The last major ritual was held in 2009.
The sacred rituals began on July 1, with Yagasala poojas inside the temple premises, marking the commencement of the ceremonies leading up to the Kumbabhishekam. During the main ceremony today, drones were used to sprinkle holy water over the devotees, adding a modern touch to the age-old tradition.

The temple, which comes under HR & CE control, has been in the news for various reasons. There have been complaints of the temple charging exorbitant entrance and darshan fees, making it accessible only to the well-off, while depriving the poor of the opportunity to have darshan of their beloved deity. Even now, infrastructure for devotees is said to be inadequate. A video that went viral shows sewage water overflowing near the bus terminal, with sanitation staff pouring chlorine to suppress the foul stench.
To oversee the arrangements, the DMK government deputed three senior IAS officers. The district administration and police, led by ADGP Davidson Devasirvatham, coordinated efforts to ensure that the event proceeded smoothly and safely.

For the convenience of the large number of pilgrims, three temporary bus stands were established at key approach points along the Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, and Nagercoil roads. Parking facilities were arranged for over 20,000 buses and 10,000 private vehicles across 18 designated lots, each provided with drinking water, sanitation amenities, and proper lighting.

In May 2025, following objections regarding the date and time fixed for the Kumbabhishekam, the vacation bench of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court appointed a five-member committee to take a fresh decision. The committee included one of the petitioners, Sivarama Subramaniya Sasthrigal, along with the Sabarimala Ayyappan Melsanthi (chief priest) and Pillaiyarpatti Pitchai Gurukkal. In his petition, Sasthrigal stated that he had been responsible for fixing timings for poojas, festivals, and other rituals in the Tiruchendur temple for the past 13 years. However, it is being claimed that the temple authorities had fixed the date and time for the sacred ritual without consulting petitioner, and that the selected time was inauspicious and against Agamic shastras.
Meanwhile, major renovation and infrastructure work is being carried out at the Thiruchendur temple by the HR & CE department at a cost of Rs 100 crore. Additionally, global tech firm HCL’s Shiv Nadar has contributed Rs 200 crore towards renovation through his Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund, enabling the completion of a majority of the works.
Elsewhere, another dilapidated temple has been restored. The ancient Thimmeshwarar Temple at Thimmur has been rebuilt, and its grand Kumbabhishekam is scheduled for later today. The renovation was led by the Gurukataksham Trust and Thirukkovil Vazhipattu Kuzhu.
