Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 2 arrived in Ghana, marking the first Indian prime ministerial visit to the West African nation in three decades. The visit sets a positive tone for his five-nation tour, with a focus on strengthening India’s global partnerships, particularly in Africa.

Upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. A ceremonial Guard of Honour and a 21-gun salute were accorded to him, reflecting the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries.

India and Ghana share a longstanding relationship rooted in shared values and mutual respect. The visit is poised to recalibrate the ties with a focus on investment, energy, health, security, capacity-building, and development partnership.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister noted Ghana’s important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), underlining its position as a key partner in the Global South.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that this visit reaffirms the shared commitment to strengthen bilateral ties and bolster India’s engagement with both ECOWAS and the African Union.

Following his engagements in Ghana, Prime Minister Modi will continue his tour with visits to Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The third leg includes a visit to Argentina from July 4 to 5, followed by participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil, and concludes with a state visit to Namibia.
